Stress and Cardiovascular Disease: Hectic Jobs Affect Women’s Hearts
A new stress and cardiovascular disease study conducted at Boston’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital indicates that a stressful work life can have major cardiovascular implications for women. In the study, American women who reported a high level of job stress were 38% more likely to experience hypertension or a stroke in comparison to women who reported a low level of job stress. Even more alarming, these same women were 67% more at risk for a heart attack. What qualifies as a high level of stress? According to Dr. Michelle Albert, one of the lead researchers behind the new study, it can be defined as stress that’s too overwhelming for the body to handle and adapt to. Of course, if you’re already experiencing this level of stress at work, you probably don’t need anyone to define it for you.

Want to be Healthier? Study Says Living on the Coast Could Help
Everyone loves going to the beach, especially in the summer. Apart from simply being fun, relaxing on the sand or taking a quick dip in the water might be an effective way for some people to reduce stress when the time is right. Also, getting a reasonable amount of sun at the beach can boost your levels of vitamin D, which holds many potential health benefits. But wouldn’t it be nice to experience the benefits of living on the coast throughout the entire year? It certainly would, according to a new study conducted in Exeter, England by Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry. The study found that living near the beach not only gives you extra opportunities for fun in the sun, but better overall health as well. This is good news for those who already live the coastal lifestyle, and one more reason to dream about it for those who don’t.

Spanking Linked to Increased Risk of Mental Disorders in Children
Spanking or otherwise physically disciplining children when they’re young may increase their risk of developing not only one of the mental disorders in children, but also mental disorders when they’re older, according to a new study by researchers at the University of Manitoba. The researchers believe that between 2% and 7% of adult mental disorder cases are a direct result of physical punishment during childhood years. Some of the disorders the researchers said could be attributable to spanking include paranoia, anxiety disorder and major depression. Spanking may contribute to the relatively high rate of depression in children. It’s estimated that as many as 1 in every 33 children suffers from the condition, symptoms of which can include prolonged sad mood that disrupts daily activities, as well as strong feelings of guilt or worthlessness..

Gastric Bypass and Alcoholism Could Be Linked According to Study
Those who undergo weight loss surgery may be inadvertently increasing their risk of developing a drinking problem, according to a new gastric bypass and alcoholism study that included over 1,400 individuals who had received gastric banding, gastric bypass surgery and other forms of surgical weight loss. Before undergoing surgery, roughly 7.6% of participants reported symptoms of alcohol addiction and abuse. When the subjects were surveyed again two years after their surgeries, this figure rose to 9.6%. When translated to the general population, the findings indicate that weight loss surgery leads to drinking problems for about 2,000 Americans each year. Unfortunately for these people, some research has suggested that alcoholism could be linked to health issues such as anemia, cardiovascular disease, cancer, depression, gout, nerve damage, and of course cirrhosis.

Genetics Influence Success Potential of Nicotine Patch, Gum
For many individuals, quitting smoking can be extremely difficult, especially for the remainder of their life. While there are several approaches, techniques, and even products that are designed to assist smokers in quitting the habit, each individual needs to take the time to determine which approach is best for them. So if you have been trying to quit smoking, you may have been discouraged by recent news headlines suggesting that smoking cessation aides such as nicotine gum and nicotine patches are ineffective when it comes to kicking the habit for good.
Fortunately, a more recent nicotine patch success rate study by researchers at St. Louis, Missouri’s Washington University indicates that these types of smoking cessation products may indeed be effective for some smokers, given that they possess certain genetic variations.
