basal metabolic rate

The basal metabolic rate (BMR) of an individual is defined as the minimum number of calories that are "burned", over a 24 hour period, to perform all vital bodily functions to sustain their life while in a state of rest.

More specifically, calculating an individual's BMR returns a value that represents the amount of energy (measured in calories) required by their body to perform all of its bodily functions while remaining asleep in bed over a 24 hour period.

In addition, another important parameter in calculating an individual's BRM rate is the total daily energy expenditure (TDEE). The TDEE takes into account the individual's BRM rate plus their level of physical activity as well.

By calculating both the BRM rate and the TDEE value an individual can obtain a true value of the total number of calories that their body "burns" on a daily basis. This value can be extremely helpful for individuals that are looking to lose weight as they can simply determine their BRM rate and thereafter, begin a dietary weight loss program that consumes a lower number of calories than their BRM rate.

Below are several BRM rate tools that are designed to calculate an individual's BRM rate. The BMR calculators below utilize the most widely accepted and approved formulas and are divided by formula type, male and female, and standard English and metric.
