Vitamin D Fights Breast Cancer, Diabetes, Alzheimer’s

Over the past several days, we’ve talked about how people who are obese are usually vitamin D deficient as well, and how getting a sufficient amount of vitamin D in your daily diet is difficult because many supplements are inaccurately labeled in terms of dosages. We also talked about how 75% of the U.S. population has a vitamin D deficiency, an alarming statistic to say the least. But why are vitamin D supplements necessary for so many people in the first place? The answer is that although vitamin D is available in a limited number of foods such as fatty fish, oatmeal and fortified milk, the primary source of this vitamin is the sun. At this time of year, many Americans receive no vitamin D from the sun, even when they’re outdoors. This is due to the sun’s low angle in the sky.

Obesity Increases MS Risk, According to Kaiser Permanente

Teenage girls who are classified as very obese – defined as having a body mass index in excess of 35 – may also have a heightened risk of developing multiple sclerosis, or MS, according to a new study by Kaiser Permanente Southern California Department of Research and Evaluation. In fact, the girls involved in the study were four times more at risk for MS over the course of the study period than girls with a normal BMI. Interestingly, the association between BMI and MS was only detected in girls, not in boys. It should be remembered that MS is not the only risk of childhood obesity. Children that are severely overweight during childhood have a much higher risk for high blood pressure, high cholesterol, prediabetes and sleep apnea. Of course, there is also the unfortunate possibility of stigmatization and low self-esteem.

Hair Straightening Dangers: Congress Says Products Could Cause Cancer

If you’re fond of using a bottled spray, gunk or goo to straighten your hair in the morning, listen up: three representatives of Congress are asking the Food and Drug Administration to crack down on manufacturers of hair straightening products they believe to be a public health risk. The representatives, including Earl Blumenauer (D-Oregon), Jan Schakowsky (D-Illinois) and Edward Markey (D-Massachusetts), are concerned because they say these products contain high levels of formaldehyde, making them potentially carcinogenic. Formaldehyde has been listed as a known human carcinogen by the National Toxicology Program since 2011, but the dangers have been suspected since the early 1980s. The letter sent to the FDA could lead to major changes in how hair straightening products are formulated and labeled.

Dancing Can Alleviate Mild Mental Health Issues in Teen Girls

Dancing at a club or party can provide some unfocused cardiovascular exercise. Even better, other types of dancing can improve flexibility, increase core strength, and help burn calories. For younger people, however, the act of dancing may also have benefits beyond the physical. For example, teenage girls can help alleviate mild mental health issues such as problem internalization just through dancing, according to a new study conducted at the Karolinska Institutet’s Centre for Health Care Sciences in Sweden. In the dance and mental health study, girls reported greater improvements in health after taking dance classes twice a week in comparison to girls who did not engage in dance. The findings suggest that dance is an excellent way to improve not only physical health but mental health as well.

Breast Feeding Mom Healthy, Co-Sleeping Not

Breast milk is well-known to contain antibodies and nutrients that play a vital role in a baby’s health. Babies fed with formula rather than breast milk generally have a higher risk for conditions such as asthma, diabetes and obesity. However, moms who decide to breast-feed or co-sleep with their babies are impacting their own health, not just the health of their babies, according to a new study conducted at Northwestern University. The study found that women with the most ideal stress hormone patterns were those who breast-fed their babies but did not sleep in the same bed with them. Women who did the opposite — slept with their babies, but didn’t breast-feed them — had the worst stress hormone patterns. The news could be helpful to new moms looking for ways to reduce stress while providing optimal care for their newborns.
