Quitting Smoking Benefits: Adds 10 Years to a Woman’s Life

If you’re a woman who smokes, you could potentially add 10 years to your life by quitting before you hit middle age, according to a new study conducted by researchers at the University of Oxford in the U.K. Women in the quitting smoking benefits study who smoked until reaching middle age, or age 40, were approximately 20% more likely to die than those who never smoked over the 12 years in which the study was conducted. However, women who smoked throughout their entire lives tripled their chances of dying over the same 12-year period. While 10 years might be a surprisingly long extension to one’s life, the benefits of quitting smoking are well documented. Aside from longevity, kicking the habit can greatly reduce the chances of getting cancer, heart disease, and many other conditions affecting the respiratory system.

Premature Birth Risk Increases with Almond Oil Use

Women who are pregnant should avoid frequent exposure to certain herbal remedies including almond oil, according to a recent study conducted in Italy into premature birth causes. During the study, pregnant women who applied almond oil to their stomachs frequently doubled their risk of giving birth prematurely in comparison to women who didn’t engage in this practice. Some believe that applying almond oil to the stomach during pregnancy can prevent stretch marks, though little scientific evidence exists to back this notion. The researchers accounted for many factors that could influence birth timing, including smoking habits, drug use, age and whether the mother was carrying multiple babies, in completing their study. Many experts maintain that there is really no way to prevent stretch marks completely.

Common Pain Medications May Cause Female Hearing Loss

A new study by Brigham and Women’s Hospital indicates that women may increase their risk of losing hearing if they take acetaminophen (commonly sold as Tylenol) or ibuprofen at least twice per week. Aspirin did not appear to cause these effects. The study also found that the risk of hearing loss became greater as more pain medications were ingested per week. According to the researchers behind the study, the greatest risks are adherent to women who take ibuprofen at least six days per week, as well as women under the age of 50. The results may not come as a huge surprise to some, however, as researchers have previously shown that serious overuse of over-the-counter pain medication can play a part in things as severe as stroke and organ failure. It’s of the utmost importance to take even the most common drugs only as directed.

Breast Feeding and Depression: Breast-fed Infants Have Lower Risk

Researchers in Germany have discovered a possible link between breast feeding and depression – mothers who breast-feed their babies during infancy give them a reduced likelihood of experiencing depression as adults. The study comes on the heels of other recent studies indicating that breast-feeding offers significant benefits to moms as well as babies, including a reduced risk of breast and ovarian cancer and a lower body mass index throughout life. Although the study was relatively small, the findings showed a significant difference in depression risk between those who had and had not been breast-fed in infancy. The study seems to suggest that breastfeeding may be a simple way to prevent one of the most prevalent mental disorders in the United States. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, major depression affects around 14.8 million American adults.

PFCs in Non-Stick Pots and Pans Among Possible Reasons for Low Birth Weight

A new study conducted by Emory University indicates that exposure to a group of chemicals known as polyfluoroalkyl compounds (PFCs) affects the growth and weight of a baby both before and after being born, and is likely one of the reasons for low birth weight. PFCs are commonly found in non-stick cookware and other household products. During the study, pregnant mothers exposed to excessive levels of PFCs gave birth to unusually small babies. These same babies were then found to be unusually large at 20 months in comparison to babies born to mothers who had been exposed to fewer PFCs. The researchers accounted for factors known to influence birth and post-birth weight, such as the weight and smoking habits of the mothers, while conducting their study. The results are cause for concern due to the prevalence of the chemicals.
