Half-Million Kids Have Too Much Lead in Blood
A new study by the CDC, or Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, finds that over half a million U.S. children have abnormally high levels of lead in their blood. According to the study, which was conducted between 2007 and 2010, approximately 535,000 kids between the ages of 1 and 5 had at least 5 micrograms per deciliter of lead in their blood. Five mg/dl is the recommended maximum limit for blood lead content. The study indicates that about 2.6% of kids in the 1 to 5 age group are exposed to too much lead. Even low levels of lead in a child’s blood can cause serious physical and mental health issues, including behavioral problems, difficulty paying attention and lower IQ scores. According to the researchers behind the study, any level of lead exposure is too much, especially for a child.

The Psychological Dangers of False Positive Mammograms
A new study conducted by the University of Copenhagen in Denmark indicates that false positive mammograms can inflict lasting psychological damage on women, even when women later find that they actually don’t have breast cancer. In terms of values, calmness and other identifiers of mental well-being, women in the trial who were given a false alarm following a mammogram scored about the same six months after the mammogram as women who indeed had cancer. The researchers say their study is evidence that false positive mammograms are anything but harmless, even when women receive positive news eventually. According to the American Cancer Society, around 232,570 invasive cases of breast cancer are diagnosed each year in the United States. It is the most common form of cancer in women.

Lack of Sleep? You May be Eating Too Much to Compensate
Just a few days ago, we talked about how engaging in exercise allows for higher quality sleep at night. Many studies have shown a relationship between physical fitness and sleep, such as that women are more likely to meet their weight loss goals if they get at least seven hours of sleep each night. Now, a new causes of overeating study indicates that getting too little sleep at night could cause you to overeat the next day. Although some additional calories are necessary to compensate for the lack of sleep, the study found that people tend to overcompensate and take in too many calories as a result. While the study seemed to only concentrate on calories, it should be noted that other qualities of food may have played a role in participants’ weight gain. Late-night snacks, for example, sometimes consist of high-fat processed foods, junk food or candy.

Exercise Results in Better Sleep
A new poll conducted by the National Sleep Foundation finds that those who exercise get better sleep than those who never exercise. The effects were detected even for individuals who engage in a very limited amount of exercise. Overall, about 56% to 67% of people who said they engaged in any level of exercise reported that exercise improves sleep on virtually every weeknight. In comparison, only 39% of those who never exercised reported the same. People who reported exercising also reported fewer sleep problems than couch potatoes. An alarming 24% of those who never exercise said they have a hard time falling asleep nearly every night of the week. The same was true of only 8% of those who reported frequent, vigorous exercise. So how much exercise is needed to improve your sleep?

Vitamin D Fights Breast Cancer, Diabetes, Alzheimer’s
Over the past several days, we’ve talked about how people who are obese are usually vitamin D deficient as well, and how getting a sufficient amount of vitamin D in your daily diet is difficult because many supplements are inaccurately labeled in terms of dosages. We also talked about how 75% of the U.S. population has a vitamin D deficiency, an alarming statistic to say the least. But why are vitamin D supplements necessary for so many people in the first place? The answer is that although vitamin D is available in a limited number of foods such as fatty fish, oatmeal and fortified milk, the primary source of this vitamin is the sun. At this time of year, many Americans receive no vitamin D from the sun, even when they’re outdoors. This is due to the sun’s low angle in the sky.
