Indoor Tanning Exposé Part 2: Basal Cell Carcinoma
Yesterday, we reported that many young individuals, especially women between the ages of 14 and 22, regularly participate in indoor tanning despite understanding the documented health risks.
As previously reported, indoor tanning can lead to as high as a 75% increase in the risk of developing melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer and a common subject of indoor tanning melanoma studies.
Today, we continue our indoor tanning exposé with additional information revealing that tanning bed use can increase your chances of developing early-onset BCC (basal cell carcinoma) by 69%. The findings come courtesy of a study conducted at New Haven, Connecticut’s Yale School of Public Health.

Indoor Tanning Prevalent Among Young Women Despite Risks
If you are like many Americans, you may frequent a tanning salon during the fall and winter months as a way of maintaining your summer complexion without access to warm, sunny beaches. Or, perhaps you typically visit the tanning salons during the mid spring months to establish your base tan prior to the upcoming hot summer months. The more important question to ask is why is it that so many individuals tan anyway? Whether it is routinely tanning at a salon, in your backyard, or at the beach, literally millions of people tan each and every year.
In both cases, indoor tanning salons and outdoor tanning will expose the skin to both UVA and UVB rays of light, albeit at different ratios. While there are health and wellness benefits related to exposing the skin to UVA and UVB rays of light, as with virtually everything in life, moderation is the key.

Are Morning Snacks Ruining Your Weight Loss Efforts?
With so many individuals, from adolescents to the elderly, either overweight or obese in today’s society, it’s no wonder that there is no shortage of “so called” expert advise on how to safely and effectively lose excess body weight.
With so many approaches being touted as the latest and greatest way to lose weight, how is an individual to determine what they believe to be the best approach?
For example, there is a difference in weight loss approach where some individuals recommend regularly consuming three square meals per day, while others say that you will better stabilize your blood sugar level, feel less hungry and ultimately lose more weight by grazing, defined as consistently eating six smaller meals throughout the day.
Additional examples include differences in what types of foods should be consumed when trying to lose weight and should individuals looking to lose weight eat breakfast – and to top it off, now there is a new study that is suggesting that healthy morning snacks may reduce the effectiveness of your weight loss efforts.

Canned Food Contains More BPA Than Previously Assumed
There are primarily three approaches to consider when choosing how to purchase fruits and vegetables: fresh right from the garden and/or orchard, frozen, or canned. While virtually everyone would agree that the best approach is to regularly consume all natural fresh fruit and vegetables; in many instances, doing so requires a little more effort.
For instance, fresh produce will spoil much more quickly than the other two approaches. This being said, in general, fresh produce will need to be consumed fairly quickly to avoid spoilage and will last longer if refrigerated.
However, while canned foods offer a convenient, although less flavorful alternative to fresh foods, researchers are now citing one more reason to avoid consuming them in large quantities.
It’s a non-debatable long-standing fact among the researchers and scientists that canned goods contain the dangerous compound BPA (bisphenol A), however, it’s also now believed that the levels of BPA in canned foods are much higher than previously thought.
Planning a Pregnancy? Consider a Mediterranean Diet
Countless Americans and individuals around the world have adopted what nutritionists and marketers call a “Mediterranean style diet” – one that is rich in a variety of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, fish, healthy oils, and legumes – as a means of losing excess body weight or maintaining their current weight if it is at a healthy level.
Indeed, the Mediterranean diet is an excellent dietary lifestyle choice for individuals that are in the pursuit of weight loss, as it’s ideal for decreasing the overall total calories consumed per day while helping to ensure a well balanced intake of a variety of important vitamins and minerals. In addition, clinical evidence has even linked the Mediterranean diet to lowered risks of heart disease, diabetes, bone density loss, as well as other obesity type related illnesses, while improving brain function and health.
