Arsenic Detected in Some Organic Foods
In most cases, choosing the organic versions of the foods you purchase is a great way to lower your exposure to a variety of harmful chemicals, pesticides, antibiotics, and in some cases, steroids and growth hormones.
Unfortunately, a recently published study has proven that this doesn’t always hold true. The study detected high levels of arsenic in a number of organic food products, including energy shots, cereal bars and, most alarmingly, arsenic in organic baby food. It’s currently believed that consuming arsenic can increase your risk of cancer.
In particular, the study found that organic brown rice syrup, commonly used in organic foods as a replacement for high fructose corn syrup, was to blame.
The most tainted products examined in the study were found to have arsenic concentrations in excess of 12 times the safe drinking water limit as defined by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Most Kids Fall Short of Sleep Recommendations, Study Shows
We all know, as adults, that it is easy to get caught up in the daily grind of life’s trials and tribulations. In many cases, this type of lifestyle leads to erratic eating habits, inconsistent physical activity, and irregular sleeping patterns. In addition, parents that find themselves in this scenario often find that it can affect their children’s lifestyles as well.
If you frequently worry about sleep recommendations for children, you are not alone. A recent study proves that, first, parents have been worrying about this problem for approximately the last century, and second, their fears are based in reality. In fact, the study showed that the average child falls short of getting enough sleep each night by 37 minutes. Lisa Anne Matricciani, the lead author behind the University of South Australia study, described the findings as “surprising.”

Does Spanking Increase Child Aggression?
Parents have debated this vary question, to a varying degree, for literally centuries: does spanking a child teach them important lessons that add value to their life, or does it teach them that violence is an acceptable solution to a problem? It should be noted that there is an obvious difference between physically disciplining your child and physically abusing your child. In fact, as with most things in life there is a balance and physical discipline is no different.
A new study conducted by the University of Manitoba’s Family Social Sciences department indicates that slapping or spanking your child can have serious negative effects on their long-term development. However, it is also important to mention that there are conflicting studies that show that appropriate levels of physical discipline are beneficial in child rearing.
This being said, it is ultimately up to the parent to determine when and if physical discipline is necessary. To this end, it is important to remember that in times where discipline is required, the end goal is to use the approach that is best suited for teaching the lesson that actions have consequences.

New USDA Mandates to Require Healthier School Lunches
With the obesity epidemic showing no signs of slowing down, one of the hottest topics in the news as of late has been healthier school lunches throughout the United States.
Individuals ranging from television chef Jamie Oliver to First Lady Michelle Obama have sharply criticized school lunch programs for their tendency to serve meals that are packed with highly processed foods, fat, sugar and sodium while lacking in a variety of important vitamins and minerals.
New school lunch standards adopted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) will begin to address and change all of that, as schools will be required to follow a stricter set of guidelines dictating the portions and types of foods served to America’s children and teens.

Are Dissolvable Tobacco Products Marketed to Children?
The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) is currently conducting an investigation into the potential public health impact of a newly developed cigarette alternative referred to as dissolvable tobacco products.
While the tobacco industry claims that the dissolvable tobacco products are designed to cut down on litter and reduce second hand smoke, many parents and health experts alike are worried that children could possibly mistake the new dissolvable tobacco products for candy.
If this scenario were to occur, the primary concern is that it could potentially lead to a child developing a nicotine addiction or possibly even experiencing a nicotine overdose, which could result in a life threatening situation.
