Fathers Who Smoke Increase Leukemia Risk of Children
If you’re a male smoker and you plan on conceiving a child in the near future, now may be the time to kick your habit based on new research into the causes of leukemia in children.
New Research from Australia indicates that men who regularly smoke are 15% more likely to father a child who will develop acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), the most common type of childhood cancer.
The National Cancer Institute states that ALL affects at least 6 children per 200,000 born. While rare relative to other childhood diseases it is quite common when compared to other childhood cancers. In addition, roughly 1,000 children die of ALL each year. The news shines a light on the fathers impact on the child’s health, which was initially thought to be less significant.

Children of Obese Mothers have Higher Asthma Risk
We have all heard the statistics associated with the increases in the number of individuals that are either overweight or obese. In addition, most individuals also understand that being obese increases their personal risk of developing a wide variety of diseases and health disorders, including several types of cancer, heart disease, stroke, hypertension, high cholesterol, osteoarthritis, diabetes and more.
However, many women may not realize that obesity during their pregnancy can also increase the probability of their children contracting a variety of diseases at a very young age as well – including asthma. In fact, a recent Swedish study indicates that obese mothers have a significantly higher likelihood of birthing a child that will develop asthma when compared to mothers that were of a normal body weight.

Want Your Kids to Eat their Veggies? Don’t Force Them, Study Says
We are all familiar with, at times, the never ending battle to get our kids to consistently eat their vegetables. Although your first instinct might be to use pressure to get your children to eat their vegetables, perhaps even threatening discipline as a consequence of not doing so, a new study reports that you may be doing more harm than good.
The study, conducted at England’s Loughborough University, located in Leicestershire, indicated that parents who urge their children to eat a certain type of food greatly reduce their chances of their kids actually doing so.
The study included a population of 104 mothers, all with children between the ages of 3 and 6. The parents answered a series of questions regarding their children’s eating habits.
Once all of the questionnaires were completed by the parents, the responses were then gathered and compiled. Thereafter, the results were clinically analyzed to determine the results and conclusions of the study.
