Coffee During IVF: Excessive Consumption Could Reduce Fertility

It will likely come as no surprise that over-consumption of coffee can lead to insomnia, upset stomach, irritability and even muscle tremors. However, the risks may be even worse for specific groups of people. For example, researchers from Denmark recently conducted a study finding that drinking excess coffee during IVF may reduce fertility in women who seek to become pregnant through in vitro fertilization (IVF). The study found that women who drink six or more cups of coffee daily reduce their chances of becoming pregnant through IVF by up to 50%. If you’re a typical coffee drinker, or even a serious coffee lover, there’s probably no need to worry as the study found no fertility loss in women who drank between 1 and 5 cups of coffee per day. For women who drink more than five cups daily, however, the reduction in fertility is equivalent to smoking cigarettes.

Peel an Apple to Lose Weight? Study Says Yes

Eating an apple to lose weight could be a reasonable part of your weight loss regimen. Besides being a snack that contains very little fat or sodium, some research suggests that apples could play a part in kidney stone prevention as well as reduced risk of skin and respiratory diseases. Apples are also a good source of soluble fiber. Recently, however, a new study conducted on mice suggests that the peels of an apple actually contain a powerful ingredient capable of preventing obesity and spurring weight loss. The compound, known as ursolic acid, is also found in cranberries, prunes and various herbs (thyme, oregano, lavender, rosemary, basil, peppermint, etc.) in addition to apple peels, though it’s most concentrated in the latter. Previous studies have indicated that ursolic acid may have strong anti-cancer properties as well.

Scheduled Eating Prevents Weight Gain

Conventional dietary wisdom says that weight gain is primarily caused by consuming more calories than your body burns on that given day. While that’s certainly true, it’s also caused by adhering to an unusual eating schedule, according to a recently published study involving mice. Now, scientist believe they have found evidence that an eating schedule to lose weight is a good part of a healthy diet plan.

During the study, the mice that received a high-fat diet and were allowed to eat around the clock gained weight, as expected.

However, a second group of mice that was fed the exact same diet but restricted to an eight-hour eating schedule did not gain as much weight, despite eating the same number of calories overall as the mice in the first group.

According to the researchers, the results of the study lend credence to the notion that it’s not just what types of food you consume, but also when you eat them as well that will ultimately determine whether you lose weight or gain weigh.

Berries Prevent Cognitive Decline in Women

Earlier this month, we reported on a recently published United Kingdom study indicating that regularly consuming berries may reduce the risk of developing Parkinson’s disease. A more recently published study by clinical researchers at the Harvard Medical School supports these findings, concluding that women who eat blueberries and strawberries may slow their rate of mental decline in later life.

The mental health and cognitive benefits of berries may be due to their flavonoid content, according to the medical researchers. Flavonoids can be defined as phytonutrients in plant-based foods that typically contribute to the color of the actual food. Most flavonoids act as antioxidants. More specifically, they assist in neutralizing overly reactive oxygen containing molecules and prevent them from damaging parts of other healthy cells.
