Ways to Boost Memory: Study Says Have a Baby

New moms may receive a memory improvement, according to a new study by researchers at Miami’s Carlos Albizu University. In the study, women who recently had children performed better on visuospatial memory tests, or tests designed to gauge the subject’s ability to retain memories about their physical surroundings, than women without children. Lead researcher Melissa Santiago said that the findings run contrary to the traditional notion that women experience a drop in cognitive function and memory after giving birth. For example, existing studies have delivered mixed results, with some indicating that childbirth is detrimental to memory and cognition, and some indicating the opposite. Studies involving laboratory rats, which are genetically similar to humans, show that motherhood numbers among the many ways to boost memory.

All-Natural Hair Removal Methods – Sugaring

Many natural hair removal methods that date back to ancient times are actually still in use today. For example, an Arabic technique known as “threading” is regaining popularity, often as a method for shaping eyebrows. The technique makes use of looped thread that pulls the hair out by the roots. Perhaps one of the best ancient and natural techniques actually involves the use of sugar. While it’s actual appearance is not clear, sugaring may have first become popular in the Middle East, particularly within areas like Persia around 1900 BC. One of the major draws to sugaring, according to one sugaring Seattle studio, is the fact that sugaring tends to be a much less irritative form of hair removal. Unlike waxing, sugaring does not remove live skin cells from your body, instead simply removing the dead skin cells that accumulate during the day.

Pregnant Women Engage in Binge Drinking Like Nonpregnant Women

The idea that pregnant women should avoid alcohol is commonplace, even among women who have no intentions of becoming pregnant. Indeed, the vast majority of pregnant women don’t drink, much less become binge drinking women. Mothers most typically avoid alcohol to prevent their child from developing possible health issues such as heart defects, poor growth, and problems with speech. Alcohol consumption can sometimes also lead to miscarriage or premature birth. Unfortunately, pregnant women who do decide to binge drink typically do so in exactly the same fashion as nonpregnant women who binge drink. In other words, they do so just as frequently, and with roughly the same number of drinks per session, according to a new study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Stress and Cardiovascular Disease: Hectic Jobs Affect Women’s Hearts

A new stress and cardiovascular disease study conducted at Boston’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital indicates that a stressful work life can have major cardiovascular implications for women. In the study, American women who reported a high level of job stress were 38% more likely to experience hypertension or a stroke in comparison to women who reported a low level of job stress. Even more alarming, these same women were 67% more at risk for a heart attack. What qualifies as a high level of stress? According to Dr. Michelle Albert, one of the lead researchers behind the new study, it can be defined as stress that’s too overwhelming for the body to handle and adapt to. Of course, if you’re already experiencing this level of stress at work, you probably don’t need anyone to define it for you.

Advantages of Breast Feeding: Feed Now to Stay Thinner Later

Practically everyone knows that breast feeding is optimal for a baby’s health, and many researchers have suggested that there are some advantages of breast feeding for mom, too. For example, some research indicates that breastfeeding mothers could have a lower risk of ovarian cancer, breast cancer and type 2 diabetes. One of the most immediate benefits of breast feeding for mothers includes post-natal weight loss, which experts suggest is due to the additional calories required for a woman to produce breast milk. However, a new study is indicating that these benefits extend even further than post-pregnancy weight loss. In fact, the study shows that women who breast feed during motherhood are more likely to have a healthier body weight decades later, even into their 50s and 60s.
