Chocolate Lovers Rejoice: Chocolate Lower BMI Studies Confirmed

It’s no secret that chocolate is one of the most popular sweets available. In 2001, it was estimated that Americans consumed around three billion pounds of the candy. Consuming too much chocolate can certainly have negative effects, but when done right, some research suggests the candy could actually be good for you. But can chocolate lower BMI? A recent study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine has found that people who eat chocolate frequently have a lower average BMI than people who eat chocolate less often. Participants in this study certainly didn’t indulge in a full chocolate cake, of course. Instead, participants treated the chocolate more like a supplement in their lifestyles, consuming the tasty treat about two times a week. Participants in the study also exercised an average of 3.6 times each week.

Peel an Apple to Lose Weight? Study Says Yes

Eating an apple to lose weight could be a reasonable part of your weight loss regimen. Besides being a snack that contains very little fat or sodium, some research suggests that apples could play a part in kidney stone prevention as well as reduced risk of skin and respiratory diseases. Apples are also a good source of soluble fiber. Recently, however, a new study conducted on mice suggests that the peels of an apple actually contain a powerful ingredient capable of preventing obesity and spurring weight loss. The compound, known as ursolic acid, is also found in cranberries, prunes and various herbs (thyme, oregano, lavender, rosemary, basil, peppermint, etc.) in addition to apple peels, though it’s most concentrated in the latter. Previous studies have indicated that ursolic acid may have strong anti-cancer properties as well.

One-Quarter of U.S. Teens are Diabetic or Pre-diabetic

Most of us are aware that living a healthy lifestyle that is filled with regular and consistent physical activity, a high quality nutritional diet that includes routinely consuming whole foods that are high in vitamins and minerals, and ensuring that we receive an adequate amount of rest, relaxation, and sleep are imperative to good health and mental wellness.

However, it is becoming more and more evident that this type of lifestyle needs to be incorporated at a much younger age than most people thought as many of the medical conditions and diseases that appeared to be reserved for the elderly are no longer the case. This being said, cases of cancer, diabetes, a variety of allergies, obesity, high blood pressure, and heart disease, just to name a few, are all occurring at younger and younger ages across the United States.

For instance, diabetes in teens is becoming an increasingly severe problem for America, according to a recent study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Approximately 9% of teens between the ages of 12 and 19 were diagnosed with diabetes or pre-diabetes in 1999. That figure rose to a staggering 23% by 2008, according to the researchers behind the study.

Duke Study Predicts 42% Obesity Rate in U.S. by 2030

Although a recently published Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) study indicates that obesity rates have leveled off in the United States, a new study suggests that the current pause in increasing obesity may only be temporary.

In fact, clinical researchers from Duke University now believe that obesity rates will rise steadily over the course of the next 20 years, and predict that by 2030 obesity could impact 42% of the United States population.

In order for an individual to be considered obese, they must technically have a body mass index (BMI) value that is in excess of 30. In addition, the body mass index range of values used to define an individual that is considered “overweight” is between 25 and 30.

Berries Prevent Cognitive Decline in Women

Earlier this month, we reported on a recently published United Kingdom study indicating that regularly consuming berries may reduce the risk of developing Parkinson’s disease. A more recently published study by clinical researchers at the Harvard Medical School supports these findings, concluding that women who eat blueberries and strawberries may slow their rate of mental decline in later life.

The mental health and cognitive benefits of berries may be due to their flavonoid content, according to the medical researchers. Flavonoids can be defined as phytonutrients in plant-based foods that typically contribute to the color of the actual food. Most flavonoids act as antioxidants. More specifically, they assist in neutralizing overly reactive oxygen containing molecules and prevent them from damaging parts of other healthy cells.
