Cancer Risk Drops 8% with Daily Multivitamin
Many people are familiar with the typical cancer prevention strategies: don’t use tobacco, stay physically active, eat healthy, stay out of the sun, and get regular medical checkups. However, researchers are consistently looking for new and easy actions that may help prevent the devastating condition. For example, men over the age of 50 looking to reduce cancer risk would be wise to take a multivitamin daily, according to a new study conducted by Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. Over the course of an 11-year study period, men over the age of 50 reduced their likelihood of developing cancer by 8% when they took a daily multivitamin as opposed to a placebo. Unfortunately, cancer death rates were the same among both groups, as were risks for specific types of cancer such as colon, lung and prostate.

Lycopene Benefits: Tomatoes May Reduce Stroke Risk
Men looking to reduce their risk of stroke would be wise to consume plenty of lycopene, an antioxidant found in tomatoes and other fruits and vegetables, according to a new study by the University of Eastern Finland. Men in the study with the lowest concentrations of lycopene in their bloodstreams were 55% more likely to have a stroke than men with the highest concentrations. According to Jouni Karppi, one of the lead researchers behind the lycopene benefits study, the findings add credence to the notion that people should eat at least five servings of vegetables and fruits per day. Karppi believes that the prevalence of strokes around the world would decrease if more people followed this guideline. Lycopene is also suggested by some to help reduce the risk of asthma and cancer, but scientists at the Mayo Clinic state that more research must be done to support these claims.

FDA Investigating Arsenic Found in Rice
Earlier this year, we reported on the high levels of arsenic found in certain types of foods, particularly those made with brown rice syrup. According to an ongoing investigation by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), unsafe arsenic is being found in rice. A recent study by Consumer Reports found the same, with that organization now recommending that individuals limit the amount of rice they consume. The FDA is initially recommending the same thing, though their recommendations lack specificity pending the collection of more data. For now, FDA commissioner Dr. Margaret Hamburg is advising individuals to consume a balanced diet featuring a wide variety of grains, to both maximize nutrition and minimize the potential impact of eating any food in particular. There are two types of arsenic that could be lurking in your rice.

Are Organic Foods Really Healthier For You Than Ordinary Foods?
Since organic meats and produce became popular several years ago, many consumers have wondered: are organic foods really healthier for you, or are you wasting your hard-earned money by shopping in the organic sections of your local grocery store? A new study conducted at the Stanford School of Medicine indicates that organic foods are superior to non-organic foods in certain regards, but equal in others. Your decision to shop and buy organic will ultimately come down to the priorities you hold for your family, not to mention your budget. As far as money spent on food is concerned, the choice between organic and non-organic can have a huge impact on one of the most fundamental aspects of your budget. According to a study conducted by NPR, Americans spend over 15 percent of their incomes on food alone.

Cholesterol Levels in Children Dropping
Over the last 22 years, the percentage of excessive cholesterol levels in children has dropped significantly, according to a new study performed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The study found that just 1 out of every 12 kids and teens suffer from above-normal cholesterol. The news indicates that many young people are making healthier dietary decisions, or that their parents are making healthier food choices for them. Instilling habits that prevent high cholesterol in children might eventually reduce the statistics regarding the number of American adults that suffer from the condition. A disturbingly high percentage – 33.5 percent to be exact – lives with high LDL. Even worse, people with high cholesterol have twice as much risk when it comes to getting heart disease.
