Poor or Insufficient Sleep Raises Diabetes Risk

It’s long been known that consistently receiving an adequate amount of sleep each and every night is crucial to good mental and physical health.

For example, regularly receiving 7 to 8 hours of sound sleep per night strengthens your entire immune system and hence, better enables your body to fight common colds and flu viruses. In addition, regular and consistent sleep also improves cognitive function and enhances mental focus, clarity, complex problem solving, and overall levels of concentration.

However, inadequate sleep, over time, can lead to a whole host of mental and physical issues including heart disease, obesity, fatigue, mental instability, irritability, depression, and lack of motivation, to name a few.

In addition, a newly published sleep and diabetes study indicates that the quality of your sleep is also influential on your disease risk. According to the study, sleeping inconsistently or sleeping too little could directly increase your likelihood of developing Type 2 diabetes.

Berries Reduce Parkinsons Risk in Men and Women

There has been countless reports detailing the health benefits of what are being defined as superfruits – exotic fruits such as gogi berries, acai berries and pomegranates that contain extremely high levels of antioxidants. However, antioxidants are not the only beneficial compounds that are found in berries.

Berries also contain flavonoids. Flavonoids are defined as plant-based compounds that contain powerful antioxidant properties which support reductions in inflammation, promote healthy arteries, and assist in combating the effects of aging by preventing and repairing cellular damage.

According to a newly published study, flavonoids may assist in, among several of health and wellness benefits, reducing the risk of developing Parkinson’s disease in both men and women.

The researchers behind the study believe that flavonoids, found in red wine and certain types of tea in addition to berries, may provide significant benefits to overall human health.

CDC: Sleep Breathing Problems Multiply Depression Risk

Early this month, we discussed how sleep apnea could lead to behavioral problems in children. A new depression and sleep problems study indicates that sleep apnea may also have a similar effect on the mental health and wellness of adults by increasing their risk of depression.

Additional health problems include elevated blood pressure, heart attach, stroke, heart failure, irregular beating of the heart, diabetes, worsening of ADHD, and poor cognitive function.

Sleep apnea can be defined as shallow or paused breathing during sleep. Typical treatments for individuals suffering from sleep apnea range from minor lifestyle changes to oral devices and even surgery depending on the severity of the case, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Common risk factors that are associated with individuals suffering from sleep apnea include being overweight, being over the age of 40, having a larger than average neck size, large tonsils and/or large tongue, a small jaw bone, a family history of sleep apnea, Gastroesophageal or acid reflux, or some form of nasal obstruction due to a deviated septum, allergies, or sinus problems.

ADHD Over Diagnosed Among Youngest Members of Grade

A recent study conducted by the University of British Columbia indicates that attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is most frequently over-diagnosed among the youngest children in a given elementary or middle school grade.

The conclusions drawn from the study suggest that many of the children were falsely diagnosed with having ADHD diagnosis when they were actually simply the younger and more immature, in relation to the other individuals in their grade.

The findings of the clinical study also demonstrates just how quickly children actually mature, from a mental perspective, during the early years of their lives. In all, the results of this study suggest that literally millions of children may be being incorrectly diagnosed with a condition, ADHD, that they simply do not have.

Child Sleep Apnea Leads to Behavioral Problems, Study Shows

We have all seen young children that have, at times, acted unruly, disrespectful, inattentive, hyperactive, or just plain “out of control”. In addition, many of us have also probably questioned the parenting skills of the parents and even surmised that the root of the problem with the children is in fact, the parents and the way in which they are disciplining their children. However, while a child’s actions may be highly related to the parenting skills of the parents, there are several additional factors that can contribute to the behavior of children.

To this end, a recent study conducted at Yeshiva University’s Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York indicates that children with sleep apnea, defined as extended pauses in breathing during sleep, have a greater likelihood of developing behavioral issues than those who sleep normally.

In addition, the clinical researchers also determined that more minor type sleep issues, such as mouth breathing, snoring and excessive “tossing and turning”, increase a child’s likelihood of developing behavioral issues as well.
