Exercise for Children: Kids Under 6 Need 3 Hours of Exercise Daily
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention outlines clear recommendations for adults when it comes to getting exercise. They recommend 150 minutes of moderate to intense physical activity per week, as well as engaging in muscle-strengthening activities on at least two days per week. And these are just the basics – the CDC recommends five hours of physical activity each week for even more health benefits. If you think it’s difficult to meet those goals, however, just be thankful you’re not a child. According to guidelines from three different countries, exercise for children under the age of 6 should amount to at least three hours every day. This activity should be spread out throughout the day, according to the researchers behind the guidelines. Getting this much exercise might help prevent childhood obesity.

The Sleep Diet: Exercise, Dieting… and Sleep
A new sleep diet editorial authored by Canadian researchers suggests that sleep is just as important to weight loss as physical exercise and healthy eating. The researchers believe that a widespread lack of shut-eye is a major factor in obesity prevalence, and the fact that this is relatively unknown is why so many people fail to lose weight even with diet and exercise. According to the editorial by Angelo Tremblay (Laval University, Quebec) and Jean-Philippe Chaput (Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario Research Institute), the importance of sleep to weight loss is becoming more recognized among the medical community, but fitness experts and doctors should do more to further educate patients. Aside from weight loss, it’s always a good idea to get enough sleep, as an adequate amount of rest has been known to help with memory issues and disease prevention.

Walking for Exercise More Common Among American Adults
Walking is a great option for cardiovascular exercise, particularly for those who are unable to engage in more intense forms of exercise due to a health condition or simply being out of shape. A new study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicates that more Americans are walking for exercise today than they were previously, particularly individuals living in the South. This is great news at a time when so many Americans struggle with obesity. According to the CDC study, roughly 62% of American adults walked for at least 10 minutes a minimum of one time in the week prior to being surveyed (the survey took place in 2010). When the same survey was performed in 2005, only 56% of adults reported the same. An increase of 6% over the course of just 5 years is considered significant.

Exercising and Breast Cancer: Regular Activity Lowers Risk
Research has previously suggested that regular exercise could lower hormone levels, improve immune response and maintain healthy body weight – all important factors in cancer prevention. Now, a new study states that women looking to minimize their chance of developing breast cancer in particular would be wise to engage in regular exercise and maintain a healthy body weight. The exercising and breast cancer study found that women who exercise approximately 10 to 19 hours per week are 30% less likely to develop breast cancer than women who never exercise at all. In addition, the study results indicate that women who never exercised in their younger years can still realize major anti-cancer benefits by improving health during their reproductive and post-menopausal years.

Excessive Exercise Can Damage Heart
You have probably said to yourself at sometime in the past, “If only I had the time and motivation to exercise for hours every day, my health issues and concerns would disappear – right?”
Wrong, according to a recent excessive exercise effects study conducted by researchers at Kansas City, Missouri’s St. Luke’s Hospital. In fact, cardiologist Dr. James O’Keefe and other researchers behind the study say that extreme forms of cardiovascular exercise can be detrimental to heart health, particularly in certain individuals.
The results of the study serve as unfortunate news for individuals who routinely participate in extreme endurance types sports such as triathlons, marathons and long-distance swimming and cycling races, to name a few.
However, it’s also good news for individuals who only have a moderate amount of time to devote to exercise, and whose primary goal is to improve health and fitness rather than train for competition. In fact, Dr. O’Keefe said that the vast majority of exercise benefits can be realized with less than an hour of exercise each day. “Extreme exercise is not really conducive to great cardiovascular health,” according to Dr. O’Keefe.
