Report: 10% of Strokes Result from Work Stress

work stress

While a certain level of stress within the workplace is normal, after all it is work; an excessive level of stress can certainly interfere with your productivity and can even impact your physical and emotional health and well being. For this reason, learning to deal with workplace stress can ultimately mean the difference between success and failure.

While you can not control every aspect of your work environment, it does not mean that you are completely powerless, even when you are placed in a difficult situation. This being said, finding ways to manage your workplace stress is not about making large changes that are possibly emotionally driven or necessarily rethinking your personal career goals – Instead managing your workplace stress is more about focusing on the one thing that you are always able to maintain control over: Yourself.

The Nature of the Work Stress and Health Study

A new work stress and health study conducted by researchers in Copenhagen, Denmark suggests that work-related stress increases the risk of having a stroke. The study, over 40 years in the making, identified an increased stroke risk of 40% among Danish men who frequently endured mental stress related to their jobs.

The researchers also found that 10% of the strokes suffered by subjects were directly due to job stress. The remaining 90% of strokes were due to more conventional factors such as diabetes, hypertension (high blood pressure) and chronic smoking.

The study originated in 1970 and 1971, when 4,943 male residents of Copenhagen, all aged 40 and 59, were surveyed in regards to their health. Each subject underwent a physical exam and responded to questions regarding whether they were diabetic, as well as their alcohol and tobacco consumption and other health identifiers. None of the men included in the study had suffered a heart attack or heart disease.

In the key question, the study’s facilitators asked the men if they “regularly” or “rarely” experienced psychological pressure while performing work tasks.

The male participants were then followed until 2001, for a total of 30 years. Over the course of that time, 779 of the men experienced a stroke, resulting in 167 deaths.

Strokes More Prevalent Among Higher Social Classes

Each subject of the study was placed into one of five groups depending on their social class, including their job position and education level. Interestingly, the researchers found no link between stroke likelihood and work stress among men relegated to the two lowest social classes.

However, the men in the three higher social classes who reported “regular” work stress were 38% more likely to have a stroke over the course of the study, compared to men in the same classes who reported “rare” work stress.

The researchers couldn’t pinpoint why the link only pertained to men in higher social classes. They suggested that higher-paying jobs with relatively more difficult responsibilities could produce more stress, at least in Danish culture. In general, the study found that men in the two lower social classes reported “rarely” experiencing work-related stress.

Further, the study found that increased stroke risks were most pronounced for younger men, probably because they were involved in the study for longer periods of time before retiring.

Work Stress and Health: The Bottom Line

A comprehensive study shows that roughly 10% of strokes are a direct result of work-related stress, at least among male workers of medium to high social status.

The new research adds to a growing body of evidence regarding the physical effects of work stress. Fortunately, there are ways to naturally reduce your stroke risk.

The full text of the Danish study can be found in the latest issue of the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine.
