Want to Lower Your Risk of Heart Disease? Get a Dog

A new report from the American Heart Association indicates that pet ownership is a great way for a person to reduce their risk of heart disease, especially if that pet is a dog. According to Dr. Glenn Levine, a medicine professor and author of the report, many studies have been conducted on this phenomenon over the past 10 years or so. The AHA report explains that owning a pet could have a positive influence on several risk factors that contribute to heart disease, such as poor exercise habits, obesity and hypertension, also known as high blood pressure.

Pepper Lover? Your Parkinson’s Risk May be Lower

If you’re a fan of peppers – whether they’re bell peppers or hot peppers of any variety – you could be reducing your risk of developing Parkinson’s disease without even realizing it, according to a new study by researchers at the University of Washington. In the study, those who ate peppers twice a week reduced their Parkinson’s risk by 30% in comparison to those who consumed peppers less frequently than once per week. The study seems to indicate that people with early Parkinson’s warning signs might want to increase the number of peppers in their diet. The National Parkinson Foundation lists some early warning signs, including loss of smell, suddenly smaller handwriting, trouble moving, constipation, and dizziness or fainting. These symptoms, combined with sleep trouble, slight tremors, or changes in voice, might warrant a visit to a doctor.

BPA Exposure May Reduce Testosterone Levels

A recent Chinese study indicates that frequent exposure to bisphenol A, better known as BPA, may reduce a man’s testosterone level. The study focused on men who worked in a chemical plant and were exposed to BPA over the course of no less than six months. These men were found to have lower testosterone levels on average than their peers who worked in a factory that processes and bottles tap water. Perhaps more importantly, the workers in the chemical plant were found to have lower levels of “free testosterone,” which is not bound to protein. This type of testosterone is most crucial to maintaining bodily functions, such as sexual functioning, related to testosterone levels. BPA is a chemical that is widely used in many food storage containers, especially plastic water bottles and canned foods.

FDA Recalls Sexual Enhancement Supplements

The Food and Drug Administration has issued a recall for certain sexual enhancement supplements. The FDA is recalling the products because they’ve been found to contain certain drugs not disclosed on the product labeling. Both products, including Black Ant and Vicerex, are advertised by their manufacturer as supplements designed to enhance sexual performance and libido. The FDA is asking consumers to return these products to the store where they originally purchased them, or to American Lifestyle, the manufacturer. The recall may have far-reaching effects, as sexual enhancement supplements are becoming increasingly popular throughout the country. Millions of men across the U.S. use these types of supplements in an attempt to curb erectile dysfunction or increase libido.

Coffee is Far From the Only Source of Caffeine

Along with energy drinks and certain sodas, coffee is one of the most well known and popular sources of caffeine. However, more and more products are coming on the market that include caffeine as well; sometimes this is made clear to consumers, and other times it’s not. Just recently, Wrigley’s introduced a chewing gum with a caffeine jolt called Alert Energy Caffeine Gum, which includes nearly as much caffeine as a half-cup of coffee. Other companies have already brought their own versions of caffeinated gum to the market as well. Perhaps in response to this growing trend, the Food and Drug Administration is about to more closely examine the health implications associated with the consumption of caffeine, especially as it relates to children, teens and young adults.
