Children and Pesticides: Pediatricians Outline the Dangers
The potential health risks of pesticides have been fairly well documented in adults. Some such chemicals can cause skin or eye irritation as well as damage to the body’s endocrine system. Pesticides can also affect the nervous system, as well as being carcinogens. The risks may be even worse for children, however. New guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics suggests that parents should limit their children’s exposure to pesticides as much as possible. According to the guidelines released November 26th, 2012, children and pesticides are an especially dangerous combination. The chemicals may be present in the air they breathe, the food they eat and the ground they play on. Limiting their exposure could prevent health problems now and far into the future, according to the researchers behind the new study.

Muscle Building Study Finds Many Teens Focused on Bodybuilding
A surprisingly large number of teenagers, including both boys and girls, care about building muscle and take various steps toward doing so, according to a new muscle building study by researchers at the University of Minnesota. While many of these muscle building habits are healthy, some of them could actually lead to long-term health problems, according to the researchers. It’s important for parents, doctors, educators and the teens themselves to understand which bodybuilding habits are healthy and which are not. The study, which surveyed approximately 2,800 students from 20 middle schools and high schools around St. Paul and Minneapolis, came to some interesting conclusions about the muscle building habits of teenagers. Approximately 80% of girls and 91% of boys said they exercised longer and/or harder to increase muscle. Making changes to eating habits to support muscle growth was found to be less common but still highly prevalent, with 62% of girls and 68% of boys admitting to doing so. Teens unfortunately reported using riskier methods as well, however.

Cancer Risk Drops 8% with Daily Multivitamin
Many people are familiar with the typical cancer prevention strategies: don’t use tobacco, stay physically active, eat healthy, stay out of the sun, and get regular medical checkups. However, researchers are consistently looking for new and easy actions that may help prevent the devastating condition. For example, men over the age of 50 looking to reduce cancer risk would be wise to take a multivitamin daily, according to a new study conducted by Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. Over the course of an 11-year study period, men over the age of 50 reduced their likelihood of developing cancer by 8% when they took a daily multivitamin as opposed to a placebo. Unfortunately, cancer death rates were the same among both groups, as were risks for specific types of cancer such as colon, lung and prostate.

Lycopene Benefits: Tomatoes May Reduce Stroke Risk
Men looking to reduce their risk of stroke would be wise to consume plenty of lycopene, an antioxidant found in tomatoes and other fruits and vegetables, according to a new study by the University of Eastern Finland. Men in the study with the lowest concentrations of lycopene in their bloodstreams were 55% more likely to have a stroke than men with the highest concentrations. According to Jouni Karppi, one of the lead researchers behind the lycopene benefits study, the findings add credence to the notion that people should eat at least five servings of vegetables and fruits per day. Karppi believes that the prevalence of strokes around the world would decrease if more people followed this guideline. Lycopene is also suggested by some to help reduce the risk of asthma and cancer, but scientists at the Mayo Clinic state that more research must be done to support these claims.

Over 200 Products Now Included in 2012 Peanut Butter Recall
A 2012 peanut butter recall that initially only included certain products sold at Trader Joe’s has now expanded to include roughly 240 products, according to a new announcement made by U.S. health officials. The peanut butter products are subject to recall because they may be contaminated with Salmonella, according to officials. All of the recalled products include peanut butter made by New Mexico manufacturing company Sunland Inc. An announcement from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) indicates that samples taken from the company’s manufacturing facilities have tested positive for Salmonella bacteria. Roughly 100 Sunland products were recalled toward the end of September as a result of Salmonella bacteria contamination. The expansion of the recall means that 240 products are now being pulled from store shelves and, hopefully, from home pantry shelves as well.
