Brain Exercise Preserves Memory in Old Age

Your brain needs exercise just like your body, according to a new study that finds that keeping your brain active and sharp during your teen and adult years will mitigate mental decline as you grow older. In fact, even if you’re experiencing the preliminary signs of dementia, brain exercise can still reduce mental decline. Preliminary signs include having trouble solving problems, forgetting things that were recently learned, trouble completing familiar tasks and poor judgement, especially with money. The researchers behind the study found that about 33% of mental decline experienced later in life can be attributed to physical damage to the brain, such as happens with a stroke or the onset of Alzheimer’s disease. However, they also found that about 10% of old-age cognitive decline is directly dependent on the level of brain activity that person engaged in earlier in life.

A new report from the American Heart Association indicates that pet ownership is a great way for a person to reduce their risk of heart disease, especially if that pet is a dog. According to Dr. Glenn Levine, a medicine professor and author of the report, many studies have been conducted on this phenomenon over the past 10 years or so. Taking a Supplement with DMAA? Stop Now, Says FDA

If you take a supplement containing DMAA (dimethylamylamine) you should stop doing so immediately, according to a new report from the Food and Drug Administration labeling the drug “dangerous” and “illegal.” DMAA is found in certain supplements intended to assist with weight loss and body building. The side effects can include shortness of breath, high blood pressure, irregular heartbeat and even heart attack, according to the FDA. The announcement marks the first time the FDA has officially warned consumers about the potential dangers of DMAA. However, the organization has worked previously to get supplements including the ingredient stripped from the market. In 2012, the United States military removed DMAA-containing supplements from stores on military bases after suspecting that such supplements were related to two soldier deaths.

Obese Moms at Greater Risk for Heart Attack After Giving Birth

If you’re pregnant or if you plan on becoming pregnant, it may be wise to achieve a healthier body weight. According to a new study conducted by the University of Copenhagen in Denmark, obese mothers are more likely to have a stroke or heart attack during labor. Specifically, the study found that four or five years after childbirth, obese moms have double the risk of suffering a heart attack or stroke in comparison to mothers of a normal body weight. All of the women involved in the study were approximately 30 years old. The researchers were careful to account for factors such as pregnancy complications and smoking habits when coming to their conclusions. According to a professor from the University of Southern California, around 1 in every 16,000 pregnant women will suffer from a heart attack during the actual pregnancy term.

Exercise Results in Better Sleep

A new poll conducted by the National Sleep Foundation finds that those who exercise get better sleep than those who never exercise. The effects were detected even for individuals who engage in a very limited amount of exercise. Overall, about 56% to 67% of people who said they engaged in any level of exercise reported that exercise improves sleep on virtually every weeknight. In comparison, only 39% of those who never exercised reported the same. People who reported exercising also reported fewer sleep problems than couch potatoes. An alarming 24% of those who never exercise said they have a hard time falling asleep nearly every night of the week. The same was true of only 8% of those who reported frequent, vigorous exercise. So how much exercise is needed to improve your sleep?
