Behavior Change Programs Improve Well-Being, Study Shows

Living in the so-called “information age” has produced an environment where it is easy to become overwhelmed with all of the media, technology, and data that is available. Because of this, it has become increasingly difficult to find the time to decompress as it seems like we are always having to remain engaged and respond through either email, social media, texting and yes, even the phone. The end result, it has become increasingly easy to feel overwhelmed and “stressed-out”.

A recently published study that was presented in Philadelphia at the Population Health and Care Coordination Colloquium shows that behavior change programs known as computer-tailored intervention (CTI) programs offer real, measurable results for average participants in targeted areas such as stress management and exercise dedication.

In addition to gains in these areas, researchers found that participants made major strides in other aspects of well-being including healthy behaviors, life evaluation and improving health, both mentally and physically.

Massage Amplifies Benefits of Exercise

If you’ve ever received a high quality professional massage after a long, grueling exercise session, you know how relaxing and soothing it can be. A newly published study is indicating that the health benefits of regularly receiving a sports massage aren’t just restricted to relaxation.

According to the Ontario based study, the results indicated that individuals who received a massage after 70 minutes of exercise experienced significant increases in energy production within the cells of their muscles.

Inflammation in the same cells was reduced as well. The results of the study reveals the benefits of receiving a sports massage that should tempt many exercisers and strength trainers to receive massages more frequently.

6 Tips for Safe Exercise During Winter

With winter fully upon us and many of the areas of the country experiencing record snow storms, it can be all too tempting to stay inside where it’s warm and cozy rather than exercising outdoors during the cold winter months.

However, if you have regularly exercised throughout the year and are well on your way to achieving your personal health and fitness goals, the last thing that you want to do is discontinue your workout routine through the winter months. Although setting up a personal gym at your home or becoming a member at a fitness center are great ways to stay in good shape during the colder months, many fitness seekers actually prefer the fresh air and exhilaration that comes with exercising outdoors during the winter, performing exercises like jogging, cycling, cross country skiing, and snowshoeing.

CDC Study: Obesity Rates Remain Stagnant in U.S.

Many individuals find that they are in a continual battle with trying to maintain a healthy body weight, take care of household chores and responsibilities, and excel within the workplace. The end result, in many instances it means failing to exercise regularly, inconsistent dietary habits, and erratic sleeping patterns.

This being all too true for many individuals, it is not surprising that for the past couple of decades, the obesity rate in the United States has been steadily increasing.

However, a new study released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicates that the trend may finally be slowing down. Overall obesity rates for both women and men leveled off at around 36% in 2010. These rates are similar to those recorded in 2003 through 2008.

Obesity is specifically defined as having a BMI (body mass index) of at least 30 or higher. The BMI approach to determining if an individual is underweight, overweight, or within the medically approved weight range utilizes their weight and height as the variables in the calculation. The findings are the result of a National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, that was conducted from 2009 through 2010.

Paula Deen’s Type 2 Diabetes Reveal Raises Health Questions

Earlier today, celebrity chef Paula Deen revealed to the NBC Today Show’s Al Roker (and the rest of the world) that she has Type 2 diabetes, a condition in which the body is unable to properly regulate blood sugar levels.

Paula Deen is well known for her high-fat, high-calorie, pour-on-the-sugar cooking style, which she teaches to thousands of viewers every day on her Food Network cooking show, a lifestyle under question after the Paula Deen Type 2 Diabetes reveal.

The Paula Deen Type 2 Diabetes announcement has raised some questions among both the entertainment and health industries, especially in light of the fact that she had apparently been diagnosed with the disease for over three years before making a public announcement.

Is it responsible to repeatedly tell viewers the joys of eating rich foods, such as Deen’s signature bacon/fried egg/donut burgers, while having a disease that directly stems from poor eating habits? And, for that matter, are eating habits alone responsible for Type 2 diabetes, or are there other factors at play?
