Number of Smoking-Related Illnesses Reach 14 Million
When it comes to the health risks associated with smoking, the numbers are staggering. According to a Surgeon General’s report, around 480,000 people in the U.S. die each year due to tobacco use. Worldwide, that number reaches about 5.7 million. It’s also estimated that 5.6 million Americans who are currently younger than 18 will end up dying prematurely from smoking-related illnesses if current rates stay the same. Perhaps even worse, 2.5 million out of the 20 million people that have died due to smoking since 1964 were non-smokers who succumbed to diseases related to secondhand smoke. A decade ago, the CDC estimated that 12.7 million medical conditions in the U.S. could be attributed to smoking. Now, however, a new study shows that the number has reached 14 million. The worst part about all of this, of course, is that smoking-related illnesses are entirely preventable.

Study Shows Decrease in Fast Food Calories, but Is It Enough?
Earlier this year, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation reported that major food and beverage companies such as Kraft, General Mills, NestlĂ© and Coca-Cola cut around 6.4 trillion calories from the U.S. marketplace. Now, it seems that fast food companies may be following suit. According to a study published this week in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, newer menu items in some of the largest chain restaurants in the U.S. had an average of 56 fewer calories this year than they did in 2013. This is about a 12 percent decrease in fast food calories overall. Specifically, newly introduced beverages had an 8 percent decrease in calories, while children’s items decreased by 20 percent and main courses dropped by 10 percent. These reductions in fast food calories are significant, but it’s not exactly time for health proponents to celebrate just yet.

Mental Illness Awareness Week: Exercise and Screenings Recommended
October is an important month in the world of health and fitness. It’s breast cancer awareness month, as well as AIDS awareness month, Rett Syndrome awareness month, dental hygiene awareness month and vegetarian awareness month. While all of these causes are worthwhile and important, there’s one topic that definitely shouldn’t slip through the cracks: mental health. Mental Illness Awareness Week is October 5 – 11, and it’s a great time for Americans to get educated about depression, anxiety and other mental disorders. According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, around 40 million adults suffer from anxiety disorders in the U.S. This means that you probably know someone suffering with mental illness. Aside from simply “raising awareness,” Mental Illness Awareness Week is a great time to actually take action, possibly in the form of exercise or screenings.

Even as recently as this week, scientists have made progress in determining why exercise prevents depression.

Anyone suffering from varicose veins knows how annoying and painful they can be. The twisted, enlarged veins often develop in the legs and feet, usually appearing as blue-green cords that bulge beneath the skin. Varicose veins are merely a cosmetic issue for many people. For others, however, the veins can cause pain, especially when standing or walking.
