Common Pain Medications Reduce Skin Cancer Risk

Regularly taking common pain drugs including ibuprofen and aspirin may lower an individual’s risk of developing skin cancer, according to a recent study based in Denmark.

In the aspirin and cancer prevention study, individuals who took NSAIDs, or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, welanoma and two other forms of skin cancer than the gere significantly less likely to develop malignant meneral population.

According to lead aspirin and cancer prevention researcher and epidemiologist Sigrún Jóhannesdóttir of Aarhus University Hospital, the study’s findings shouldn’t be taken as a reason to start using NSAIDs only for skin cancer prevention because they come with possible side effects of their own, including the possibility of internal bleeding and ulcers.

HPV Infection Boosts Skin Cancer Risk, Study Shows

A study conducted by Swedish researchers indicates that certain strains of HPV, or the human papillomavirus, may increase your likelihood of developing nonmelanoma skin cancers.

Specifically, the researchers found that individuals with certain types of HPV in their skin cells were at a 30% greater risk of developing squamous cell carcinoma over the course of 30 years than individuals unaffected by these types of HPV. Risk factors for skin cancer commensurate with the ongoing length of the HPV infection.

HPV is the most common type of sexually transmitted disease (STD) in the U.S. HPV is a virus from the papillomavirus family and affects the skin and the moist membranes that line the body, including the mouth, throat, fingers, nails, feet, anus and cervix.

Adult Acne in Women More Common than in Men, Study Shows

Although acne is typically thought of as a problem primarily faced by teens, it’s common knowledge that many adults develop and struggle with acne as well.

Acne is usually of result of excessive bacteria buildup, excess skin oil production and improper sloughing off of dead skin cells, though diet and other factors play a role as well, indicating that the best acne treatment for some individuals may be a simple change in eating habits.

According to a recently published study found in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, gender is yet another contributing factor to acne risk. In fact, the study shows that adult acne is more common among women than men for all age groups over 20.

FDA Approves New Advanced Skin Cancer Drug

There are literally over a hundred types of cancer that have been identified by the American Cancer Society to date. In addition, cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States, right behind heart disease, and accounts for roughly 575,000 deaths per year.

Just a couple of days ago, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced its approval of a new drug designed to fight advanced cases of basal cell carcinoma, the most common form of skin cancer. Erivedge (generic name: vismodegib) is intended to treat cases of basal cell carcinoma where the cancer has already spread throughout the body, or metastasized, and are unable to be surgically removed. Erivedge is the first advanced skin cancer drug to ever pass the stringent FDA approval process.
