Unhealthiest Restaurant Meals of 2014 Revealed
Last year, we reported that the Big Catch with Onion Rings at Long John Silver’s topped the list of unhealthiest restaurant meals in the nation. The main ingredient of the meal was fish, which is generally considered to be healthy. However, the way in which it was prepared led to it containing a startling 33 grams of trans fat, which is well-known to raise LDL levels and therefore contribute to a higher risk of heart disease. After the damning report came out, Long John Silver’s announced that it would be removing all trans fats from its food.
So, with trans fats no longer being in the Big Catch, what meals are considered to be the least healthy? According to the Center for Science and the Public Interest, The Cheesecake Factory and Red Robin are coming out as the worst offenders. The amount of exercise you’ll need to work off the meals is astonishing.

Study Says Sedentary Lifestyle the Main Culprit in Obesity
Americans have heard time and again that eating right and getting exercise will help prevent or reverse obesity. While some argue that obesity statistics have begun to plateau in America, the condition can still be considered an epidemic. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, over one third of adults in the U.S. can be considered obese. Also, Americans spent around $147 billion on obesity-related medical care in 2008. The condition, which is considered to be completely preventable, increases the risk of diabetes, stroke, heart disease and even some types of cancer.
But what is more important – eating a healthy diet or engaging in physical activity? According to a new study published in the American Journal of Medicine, lack of exercise is the main reason we’re getting fat.

U.S. Diabetes Statistics Continue to Rise
According to the latest reports from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the number of individuals in the United States suffering from diabetes is now approximately 29 million, which accounts for a staggering 12.3 percent of adults. Perhaps even more shocking is the number of adults in the U.S. who have blood sugar levels that are considered to be at pre-diabetic: 86 million. Stated another way, approximately one-third of the entire United States population is considered to be at pre-diabetic blood sugar levels.
Not only is the proliferation of diabetes a serious health concern, but it’s also financially draining. When accounting for both medical costs and lost wages, Americans spent $245 billion on the treatment of diabetes and related complications in 2012. The figure in 2010 was $174 billion.
There are many reasons and conditions that can ultimately lead to an individual suffering from diabetes. However, for the majority of people, the prevention of diabetes might ultimately involve some relatively simple lifestyle changes and modifications.

Are Fried Foods Really That Bad?
Most of us have seen the statistics depicting that more and more individuals, worldwide, are suffering from either excessive weight gain or obesity, especially within the developed nations. This, in part, is due to the fact that many individuals are finding that they are trapped in a lifestyle that is quite busy and hectic. This being said, many individuals are finding it increasingly more difficult to consistently set aside the time to regularly perform an exercise routine, to participate in a variety of physical type activities, and to consistently consume a healthy whole foods diet that is well balanced and nutritionally rich.
The combination of decreasing the total number of calories burned per day, due to lack of sufficient physical activity, while increasing the total number of calories consumed per day only serves to worsen the problem of excessive weight gain.
In regards to traditional dietary intake wisdom, at least over the last 40 years or so, individuals have been told that they should avoid fried foods due to their large quantities of saturated fat and calories. However, a newly published study suggests that fried foods don’t affect everyone equally. In the study, changes in the subjects’ body mass index (BMI) after eating fried foods seemed to depend largely on their genetic propensity for obesity.

Big Changes Coming to Nutrition Labels
With the overweight and obesity rates in the United States at such a high level a new emphasis is being placed on providing consumers with more information, in relation to the information that is contained on the nutritional labels of various food products. This being said, while there are several factors that contribute to excessive weight gain (i.e. physical activity, food choices, individual metabolism rates etc.), the quality of the food and the contents of the food are definitely a factor to consider. A new press release from the Food and Drug Administration reveals some changes slated for nutrition labels over the coming years. The changes are designed to better guide consumers in making healthy dietary decisions in light of advancements that have been made in nutritional science since 2006, the year in which nutritional labels were last updated.
