Are Fried Foods Really That Bad?
Most of us have seen the statistics depicting that more and more individuals, worldwide, are suffering from either excessive weight gain or obesity, especially within the developed nations. This, in part, is due to the fact that many individuals are finding that they are trapped in a lifestyle that is quite busy and hectic. This being said, many individuals are finding it increasingly more difficult to consistently set aside the time to regularly perform an exercise routine, to participate in a variety of physical type activities, and to consistently consume a healthy whole foods diet that is well balanced and nutritionally rich.
The combination of decreasing the total number of calories burned per day, due to lack of sufficient physical activity, while increasing the total number of calories consumed per day only serves to worsen the problem of excessive weight gain.
In regards to traditional dietary intake wisdom, at least over the last 40 years or so, individuals have been told that they should avoid fried foods due to their large quantities of saturated fat and calories. However, a newly published study suggests that fried foods don’t affect everyone equally. In the study, changes in the subjects’ body mass index (BMI) after eating fried foods seemed to depend largely on their genetic propensity for obesity.

Big Changes Coming to Nutrition Labels
With the overweight and obesity rates in the United States at such a high level a new emphasis is being placed on providing consumers with more information, in relation to the information that is contained on the nutritional labels of various food products. This being said, while there are several factors that contribute to excessive weight gain (i.e. physical activity, food choices, individual metabolism rates etc.), the quality of the food and the contents of the food are definitely a factor to consider. A new press release from the Food and Drug Administration reveals some changes slated for nutrition labels over the coming years. The changes are designed to better guide consumers in making healthy dietary decisions in light of advancements that have been made in nutritional science since 2006, the year in which nutritional labels were last updated.

Stroke Risk Spikes with Cold Weather
It’s been a miserable winter for most parts of the country, with many regions seeing record levels of both cold temperatures and snowfall, and along with the drastic weather comes an increase in serious health risks.
A newly published clinical study reveals for the first time that severe weather can be especially dangerous for those with a high risk of stroke. The Yale University study indicates that stroke risk increases when temperatures fall, and also when they raise dramatically.
While previous studies have offered mixed results on the connection between inclement weather and stroke risk, this new study appears more definitive and will ideally lead to additional research in this same area.
Before getting into the specifics of the Yale University study, it might be helpful to take a moment to review the typical early warning signs that you may be at risk of suffering from a stroke. In general, common precursors prior to suffering from a stroke include face drooping, arm weakness and speech difficulty.

Want to Drop Your Blood Pressure? Get Some Sun
Finding the time to break away from the daily grind, a vacation at the beach is one of the best imaginable ways to lower your blood pressure. However, is it the relaxation alone that’s responsible? According to the results of a new study conducted in the United Kingdom, regularly exposing the skin to the sun’s rays may also play an important role in reducing hypertension. The study, which was conducted in a laboratory environment, found that people experienced a reduction in blood pressure and dilation of their blood vessels after being subjected to 30 minutes of UVA radiation designed to mimic a Southern European summer sun. Although getting too much sun without proper protection can lead to a sunburn and even skin cancer in some cases, high blood pressure can result in fatal consequences including stroke and heart attack.

Smoking Rates Decline, But Not Enough
Worldwide, a smaller percentage of people are smoking today than they were about 30 years ago, according to a new study from the University of Washington’s Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation. Unfortunately, the growing population means that a larger number of people are smoking now than they were at that point, too. As of 2012, roughly 31% of men across the world smoked, a figure that’s still alarmingly high, though not as dire as the 41% figure observed in 1980. Smoking rates are far lower among women, and managed to drop down to 6.2% from 10% over the same time period. However, due to increases in worldwide population, about 967 million people smoke today – a figure that stood at 721 million 34 years ago. In 2012 alone, people smoked over 6 trillion cigarettes.
