FDA’s Antidepressant Warnings Backfire According to Study
Back in 2003, the FDA began to issue warnings about a possible increase in the risk of suicidal behaviors and thoughts in about one percent of the teens and children that take antidepressants. In October of 2004, they began printing this warning, which came to be known as the “black box warning,” on drug labels for such medications.
While the move was certainly well-intentioned, a new study suggests that the warnings may have actually led to an increase in suicide attempts among young people. According to the medical journal BMJ, the “black box warnings” and subsequent media attention may have led to doctors under-treating depressed teens and children for fear of increasing their risk of attempting suicide. The use of antidepressants in young adults dropped over 20 percent after the warnings came out.

Stroke Risk Spikes with Cold Weather
It’s been a miserable winter for most parts of the country, with many regions seeing record levels of both cold temperatures and snowfall, and along with the drastic weather comes an increase in serious health risks.
A newly published clinical study reveals for the first time that severe weather can be especially dangerous for those with a high risk of stroke. The Yale University study indicates that stroke risk increases when temperatures fall, and also when they raise dramatically.
While previous studies have offered mixed results on the connection between inclement weather and stroke risk, this new study appears more definitive and will ideally lead to additional research in this same area.
Before getting into the specifics of the Yale University study, it might be helpful to take a moment to review the typical early warning signs that you may be at risk of suffering from a stroke. In general, common precursors prior to suffering from a stroke include face drooping, arm weakness and speech difficulty.

Does Turkey Really Make You Sleepy?
With Thanksgiving just one day away, you and your family are probably already deep into preparations for a feast of turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, cranberry sauce and all the fixings. If you’ll be sitting down to dinner with a big crowd tomorrow, chances are good that you’ll hear at least one mention of how eating too much turkey will make you sleepy, an anecdote you probably recall hearing at countless Thanksgiving feasts in the past. Evidence of this may occur when one or more family members fall asleep after the big meal. People who are about to give an important presentation or perform for an audience are also sometimes told to eat turkey in an effort to calm nerves. But is the notion really true, or have claims of the sleep-inducing effects of turkey been exaggerated over the years?

Over 1 in 10 Children Diagnosed with ADHD
Rates of ADHD, or attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, have risen sharply in children over the past decade, according to a recent study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). While about 4.4 million children between the ages of 4 and 17 had ADHD in 2003, the figure rose to about 6.4 million children by 2011. Given the population as of 2011, these figures indicate that about 11% of children are diagnosed with ADHD. About 66% of children with the diagnosis receive prescription medication to treat it. Researchers surveyed almost 96,000 parents across the country by phone, asking questions about whether their children were currently diagnosed with ADHD, whether they’d been diagnosed with it previously, and whether they were taking any medication to treat the disorder. Researchers found that about 80% of the children diagnosed with ADHD in the past continued to carry the diagnosis. While children with ADHD are typically thought of as disruptive and in constant motion, it’s important to remember that some children with the condition are very quiet and reserved yet inattentive.

Learning a Second Language Could Prevent Dementia
A recent study conducted by researchers from the U.K. and India suggests that learning a second language and becoming bilingual can help to delay dementia and cognitive decline. During the study, which was remarkably straightforward, the researchers noticed that participants with dementia lived about 4.5 years longer before developing the disease if they were bilingual. Even after adjusting for factors such as income and educational background, the researchers determined that the results pertain to Alzheimer’s as well as two other types of dementia. The University of Edinburgh’s Dr. Thomas Bak, one of the lead researchers behind the study, said that although being bilingual won’t remove the risk of developing dementia, it can certainly delay it by many years.
