CDC Study: Cholesterol Levels Dropping in U.S. Adults

Despite the fact that over 35% of the individuals living in the United States are technically considered obese, fewer U.S. adults suffer from high cholesterol today than they did roughly a decade ago, according to a new study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

When the CDC conducted their American cholesterol levels survey, data gathered between the years of 1999 and 2000 concluded that approximately 18.3% of the United States adult population had high cholesterol.

By the time the study was conducted again in 2009 and 2010, just 13.4% of the United States population suffered from high cholesterol. This represents a 27% decline in high cholesterol prevalence over the course of just 10 years.

As most of us are aware, some household cleaners are much safer than others. In fact, even household cleaning products that are advertised as “natural” may contain hazardous chemicals that are dangerous to both human and animal health, according to a newly published study conducted by the Environmental Working Group, or EWG.

Regular Soda Consumption Boosts Stroke Risk

A couple of months ago, we reported that drinking diet soda on a daily basis may increase the probability of suffering from a heart attack or stroke by as much as 43%. Now, a newly released clinical study is indicating that drinking regular soda on a daily basis may influence stroke risk as well.

In fact, adults that participated in the study who drank at least one regular soda each day increased their risk of having a stroke over a 20-year to 30-year period by 16%.

The medical researchers that performed the study to determine if there was a correlation between soda consumption and stroke risk concluded that regularly substituting non-sugar-sweetened beverages was statistically successful at reducing the probability of suffering from a stroke.

CDC Study: Women Exercise Less than Men

Women have some catching up to do when it comes to matching the exercise habits of men, according to a new study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The purpose of the study was to determine how many minutes of moderate-to-vigorous exercise average men and women participate in each day. The researchers determined that men average about 30 minutes per day, while women fall quite short at just 18 minutes daily.

The researchers said that study participants who received less than 30 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous exercise each day were more likely to develop metabolic syndrome, defined as symptoms related to high blood pressure, high blood sugar, low HDL cholesterol levels, cardiovascular disease and obesity.
