Can Diet and Exercise Cure Diabetes?
Can diet and exercise cure diabetes? According to one study, yes. A new study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicates that individuals may be able to reverse their Type 2 diabetes by practicing better habits related to diet and exercise. Although the news should give hope to the 26 million Americans suffering from diabetes, the CDC researchers noted that complete remission is quite rare. During the study, obese patients completed one year of counseling sessions encouraging them to exercise more and eat a healthier, more calorie-conscious diet. After this year had passed, 11.5% of the participants experienced at least a partial reversal in their condition, and their blood sugar levels returned to a prediabetic state without the assistance of medication. Only 2% of the obese adults achieved the same without counseling.

New Depression Drug is Faster, has Fewer Antidepressant Side Effects
Researchers have just completed a study on a new and experimental depression drug capable of alleviating symptoms of depression in individuals for whom other drugs have failed. Although the beneficial effects of the drug appear to have a short duration, they work rapidly at treating symptoms in comparison to other depression drugs, and exhibit fewer antidepressant side effects. The drug, so far referred to as AZD6765, cleared up depression symptoms in subjects just 1.3 hours. Although the effects only lasted for around 30 minutes in some patients, others benefited as long as 2 days. The average participant had already tried seven different rounds of depression treatment involving various drugs and therapy methods, and almost half of them had already received shock therapy.

Hair Straightening Dangers: Congress Says Products Could Cause Cancer
If you’re fond of using a bottled spray, gunk or goo to straighten your hair in the morning, listen up: three representatives of Congress are asking the Food and Drug Administration to crack down on manufacturers of hair straightening products they believe to be a public health risk. The representatives, including Earl Blumenauer (D-Oregon), Jan Schakowsky (D-Illinois) and Edward Markey (D-Massachusetts), are concerned because they say these products contain high levels of formaldehyde, making them potentially carcinogenic. Formaldehyde has been listed as a known human carcinogen by the National Toxicology Program since 2011, but the dangers have been suspected since the early 1980s. The letter sent to the FDA could lead to major changes in how hair straightening products are formulated and labeled.

Low Iron in Babies May Be Linked to Bad Behavior as Toddlers
Children in the toddler age group, typically considered to be ages one through three, are infamous for throwing tantrums and misbehaving. Aside from different parental strategies, a small child’s diet may also affect how they behave. For example, a recent study by researchers in Sweden suggests that future behavioral problems may be reduced in underweight babies by giving them iron supplements. In the study, underweight babies who went without iron supplements increased their risk of having behavioral issues up to 5 times by the age of 3 in comparison to underweight babies who did receive iron supplementation as infants. Past studies have shown that underweight babies — in other words, those weighing less than 5.5 pounds at birth — are prone to both iron deficiency and behavioral problems now linked to low iron in babies.

To Treat the Cause of ED, Treat Gum Disease First
There are numerous possible causes of erectile dysfunction. Physical causes can include high cholesterol, high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes and obesity. There are psychological causes as well, however, which can include stress, depression, anxiety or relationship troubles. Researchers are still discovering new contributing factors also. For example, a new study by researchers at Inonu University in Turkey has discovered that treating gum disease can actually alleviate symptoms of erectile dysfunction. The study adds to a growing body of research indicating that your dental health is influential on may other aspects of your health, as well. Although the study did not prove that gum disease is the cause of ED entirely, it suggests that the symptoms of ED can be alleviated with improvements in dental health.
