“Hot” and Cold Combo May Be Weight Loss Secret – Study
A new study reveals two seemingly strange ways to accelerate fat burning and lose weight: chili peppers and low temperatures. The study found that both of these things increase the amount and effectiveness of brown fat cells in the body. Unlike the more common white fat cells that store energy, brown fat cells are excellent at burning energy. This is because brown fat cells use energy to help regulate body temperature. The study was conducted in Japan by Hokkaido University Graduate School of Medicine. According to medicine professor Dr. Clifford Rosen of Tufts University, who did not have any involvement in the study, no previous study has proven it possible to incite brown fat growth and activity in people who lack brown fat cells to begin with.

Exercise Matches Drugs in Fighting Certain Diseases
When it comes to treating diseases, exercise might too often be viewed as a preventative action. More and more information is showing that exercise might actually be a solution when it comes to specific types of conditions. A new review of over 305 controlled studies indicates that people with certain common and potentially fatal diseases could benefit from exercise as much as they could from prescription medications. The researchers behind the review looked at studies concerning the effects of exercise on the risk of death resulting from prediabetes, stroke, heart disease and heart failure, as well as studies examining how drugs affect these diseases. A total of 340,000 people participated in the studies covered by the review.

Fad Diet Alert: No, Mushrooms Don’t Cause Magical Weight Loss
Celebrities ranging from Katy Perry to Kelly Osbourne are touting the supposed benefits of the “M Plan,” a new fad diet whose proponents claim causes weight loss in exactly the places where women usually want to see it most – the thighs, hips and waist. Like most fad diets, the eating plan is specific and rather silly: replace one meal per day with just mushrooms, continue this every day for two weeks, and watch the pounds melt away. However, also as with the vast majority of fad diets, health and nutrition experts are skeptical of the claims. Adding to the skepticism, no one company, individual, or health professional seems to be taking credit for the development of the diet. A diet plan not created by a dietician or health expert should always be approached with an air of caution.

Early Exercise Prevents Later Epilepsy
Young people who exercise end up with strong muscles and bones, decreased likelihood of obesity, lower blood pressure, reduced possibility of getting type 2 diabetes, and better sleep. Adding to these benefits, a new Swedish study found that engaging in regular, vigorous exercise as a young person, may reduce your chance of developing epilepsy when you get older. Over 1.17 million Swedish men, all of whom completed cardiovascular fitness tests upon enlisting for the military at 18 years of age, were included in the study. The age of the men varied greatly, as they were born between the years of 1950 and 1987. Just under 6,800 men received an epilepsy diagnosis over the course of the 40-year study, according to researchers.

Phthalates and BPA Tied to Teen Obesity, Insulin Resistance
A pair of new studies have found a potential link between teen insulin resistance and obesity and phthalates and bisphenol A, two chemicals commonly found in certain types of food packaging. However, the researchers aren’t sure whether the increased prevalence of obesity and insulin resistance is directly due to the presence of these chemicals, or whether other factors are responsible. The researchers plan to conduct additional studies to gain a better understanding of the link. BPA in particular has increasingly become a topic of contention. The chemical is widely used in plastics and can be found in the packaging of many foods and drinks. It is also present in infant bottles, medical devices, canned food and water bottles. While many of these things can be avoided, BPA might also be found in certain water supply pipes.
