Excess Body Weight Increases Pregnancy Complication Risk
There have been countless clinical studies that have touted the health risks associated with obesity. From an elevated probability of contracting some form of heart disease, a variety of cancer types, type 2 diabetes, and high blood pressure, to name a few.
Additionally, while many women are familiar with the fact that obesity increases the risk of experiencing complications during pregnancy, what about the pregnancy risks for women who only carry a modest amount of excess body weight?
According to a new study, women who are overweight but not necessarily obese are more likely to increase their pregnancy complication risks during pregnancy when compared to women of a normal body weight, especially if their blood sugar levels are moderately elevated as well.

Study: Weight Loss Programs are Best Bet for Obese Patients
If you continually struggle with trying to lose excess body weight, or are technically considered to be obese, becoming a member of a healthy weight loss program may be the most safe and effective way of losing weight, according to a newly published study. In the study, obese subjects who reported losing 10% or more of their excess body weight over the course of the previous year were more likely to have done so through a weight loss program than those who lost a lesser amount of weight.
Also reported within the same study, subjects who accomplished losing 5% or more of their total body weight were more likely to have done so through other means, such as using prescription weight loss supplements, exercising more often or consuming less fat and calories. Of course, any of these elements could be incorporated into a healthy weight loss program as well.

For Exercise, Short and Intense Beats Long and Moderate
If you exercise with a high level of regularity, or if you’re planning to start an exercise regimen in the near future, you may wonder: given two workouts that burn an equal number of calories, which type of exercise routine actually provides a greater number of health benefits – brief and intense short exercise routines, or longer and milder ones?
According to data recently published by clinical researchers from Ontario’s Queen’s University, the initial option is the healthier approach. In fact, the researchers discovered that individuals who regularly engaged in intense exercise were 66% less likely to develop metabolic syndrome when compared to the individuals that did not. In addition, this conclusion holds true even when all of the individuals in question burn the same number of calories per pound of body weight.

Chocolate Eaters Have Lower BMIs, Study Shows
If you like chocolate, you’ll love this: a new study shows that individuals who regularly eat chocolate have lower body mass indexes (BMI) than people who eat chocolate less frequently.
Your BMI is a comparison between your height and your weight, and is typically relied upon as a general indicator of whether you’re overweight. BMI scores matter little for athletes and strength trainers, who usually weigh more than their same-height peers due to additional muscle mass.
The researchers involved in the chocolate lower BMI study were especially surprised at their conclusions given that the participants who ate chocolate most frequently also tended to consume the most calories, and didn’t make up for these extra calories through additional exercise.

Five Ways to Move More and Sit Less at Work
There’s an old saying that goes something like this: “Why stand when you can sit, and why sit when you can lie down?” From a health and fitness perspective, the opposite of this is true. In fact, a number of sedentary work and health studies have shown that sitting down for extended periods of time during the workday can increase your risk of developing blood clots and a variety of other cardiovascular conditions, as well as your overall risk of dying at a younger age.
Fortunately, even the most dedicated desk-jockeys should be able to get up and move around at work, even if it’s just for a few short minutes. Doing so will not only help you maintain your physical health, but increase the flow of oxygen and blood to your brain, improving your mental clarity and helping you get more done during the work day.
