CDC: Obesity Rates Down for Low-Income Preschoolers

Obesity rates are finally on the decline, at least for children between the ages of 2 and 4, according to a new announcement from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or CDC. The study, which focused specifically on low-income youngsters between the years of 2008 and 2011, found declining obesity numbers in 18 U.S. states as well as the Virgin Islands. Dr. Tom Frieden said that although the decline was admittedly minor at just 1% to 2%, it’s significant because it represents positive progress rather than yet another concession to rising obesity rates.

Obesity, Exercise Both on the Rise in U.S.

A recent study of individual counties in the United States finds that, on average, both obesity rates and exercise rates are increasing in the United States. In the study, a sufficient level of exercise was defined as 75 minutes of intense exercise or 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week. In the majority of counties, men were found to be getting sufficient weekly exercise more frequently than women, though women made more progress in this area than men over the course of the study period. While researchers can basically only speculate as to why the phenomena would simultaneously occur, it may have something to do with the fact that preventing obesity is fairly easy to do on paper. Making healthy food choices, getting better sleep and getting at least some exercise are all quite simple and can help curb obesity. However, not going far enough will likely do little.

Fast food is generally considered to be very unhealthy, but some meals are worse than others. So, what’s the least-healthy restaurant meal in the United States? Although you might expect it to be some enormous triple bacon and cheese combo from one of our many fast food burger joints, it’s actually one that includes a main course typically thought of as healthy: fish. But according to the CSPI, or Center for Science and the Public Interest, the organization that rated the meals, this particular meal is unhealthy not because it includes fish, but because of how the fish is prepared and what comes with it.

Marijuana Use Lowers Diabetes Risk – Study

A new study by researchers at the University of Arizona College of Medicine has come to conclusions that are surprising the entire medical community. According to the study, people who regularly use marijuana have a lower risk of developing Type 2 diabetes than their peers. Previous studies have already indicated that people who use marijuana consume more calories than those who don’t, but in spite of this, they tend to have lower body mass indexes and are less prone to obesity. These findings make it less surprising that marijuana use would have some influence on diabetes risk. The new study focused specifically on how marijuana impacts insulin levels and overall metabolism. The study also seems to indicate that the scientific community may be calling for further research into the potential health benefits of marijuana.

Want to Lower Your Risk of Heart Disease? Get a Dog

A new report from the American Heart Association indicates that pet ownership is a great way for a person to reduce their risk of heart disease, especially if that pet is a dog. According to Dr. Glenn Levine, a medicine professor and author of the report, many studies have been conducted on this phenomenon over the past 10 years or so. The AHA report explains that owning a pet could have a positive influence on several risk factors that contribute to heart disease, such as poor exercise habits, obesity and hypertension, also known as high blood pressure.
