Quitting Smoking Benefits: Adds 10 Years to a Woman’s Life
If you’re a woman who smokes, you could potentially add 10 years to your life by quitting before you hit middle age, according to a new study conducted by researchers at the University of Oxford in the U.K. Women in the quitting smoking benefits study who smoked until reaching middle age, or age 40, were approximately 20% more likely to die than those who never smoked over the 12 years in which the study was conducted. However, women who smoked throughout their entire lives tripled their chances of dying over the same 12-year period. While 10 years might be a surprisingly long extension to one’s life, the benefits of quitting smoking are well documented. Aside from longevity, kicking the habit can greatly reduce the chances of getting cancer, heart disease, and many other conditions affecting the respiratory system.

Premature Birth Risk Increases with Almond Oil Use
Women who are pregnant should avoid frequent exposure to certain herbal remedies including almond oil, according to a recent study conducted in Italy into premature birth causes. During the study, pregnant women who applied almond oil to their stomachs frequently doubled their risk of giving birth prematurely in comparison to women who didn’t engage in this practice. Some believe that applying almond oil to the stomach during pregnancy can prevent stretch marks, though little scientific evidence exists to back this notion. The researchers accounted for many factors that could influence birth timing, including smoking habits, drug use, age and whether the mother was carrying multiple babies, in completing their study. Many experts maintain that there is really no way to prevent stretch marks completely.

Lack of Sleep Reduces Fat Metabolism
Fat cells have difficulty responding to insulin, the hormone responsible for regulating blood sugar levels, when you’re sleep deprived, according to a new study by researchers at the University of Chicago. As a result, the metabolism of fat cells slows down considerably. The findings add to a growing body of evidence establishing a link between lack of sleep fat metabolism, and body weight, including a recent study showing that sleep deprivation inhibits fat burning and increases muscle loss. The results may not be entirely surprising, however, as the benefits of getting a good night’s sleep seem to be nearly endless. In addition to simply making a person feel rested a ready for the day, getting consistent sleep has mental health benefits and can potentially lower the risk for heart disease. Sleep also plays an important role in immune functions and preventing infections.

Cancer Risk Drops 8% with Daily Multivitamin
Many people are familiar with the typical cancer prevention strategies: don’t use tobacco, stay physically active, eat healthy, stay out of the sun, and get regular medical checkups. However, researchers are consistently looking for new and easy actions that may help prevent the devastating condition. For example, men over the age of 50 looking to reduce cancer risk would be wise to take a multivitamin daily, according to a new study conducted by Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. Over the course of an 11-year study period, men over the age of 50 reduced their likelihood of developing cancer by 8% when they took a daily multivitamin as opposed to a placebo. Unfortunately, cancer death rates were the same among both groups, as were risks for specific types of cancer such as colon, lung and prostate.

Exercise for Children: Kids Under 6 Need 3 Hours of Exercise Daily
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention outlines clear recommendations for adults when it comes to getting exercise. They recommend 150 minutes of moderate to intense physical activity per week, as well as engaging in muscle-strengthening activities on at least two days per week. And these are just the basics – the CDC recommends five hours of physical activity each week for even more health benefits. If you think it’s difficult to meet those goals, however, just be thankful you’re not a child. According to guidelines from three different countries, exercise for children under the age of 6 should amount to at least three hours every day. This activity should be spread out throughout the day, according to the researchers behind the guidelines. Getting this much exercise might help prevent childhood obesity.
