Women, African Americans Hit Hardest By Heart Disease Risk Factors
Physicians often split heart disease risk factors into two categories: modifiable and non-modifiable. Non-modifiable risk factors include things that cannot be changed such as age, family history, ethnic origin and gender. On the other hand, modifiable factors represent things that a person generally has some control over. These factors can include hypertension, high cholesterol, physical inactivity, tobacco use, diabetes, poor diet, alcohol consumption, stress, ingesting certain medicines, and being poor (although some would argue that financial status is non-modifiable in certain parts of the world). According to a new report from the American Heart Association, it’s now thought that women and African Americans are more highly affected by the non-modifiable heart disease risk factors. Also, while the gender gap seems to be narrowing, the gap between races may be increasing.

Diabetes Sufferers Could Benefit From Interval Training
Physical activity is a very common part of diabetes treatment. Type 2 sufferers are often advised to maintain a regular exercise program in order to lose weight and control blood sugar. In addition, exercise can strengthen muscles, lower blood pressure, improve circulation, reduce stress, lower LDL levels and boost energy, all of which are important for diabetes sufferers. Obesity is a major risk factor for type 2 diabetes, as well as for heart disease and stroke. So, getting exercise for the treatment of diabetes may also help prevent these other deadly conditions.
The best types of exercises for diabetics are still being determined, however. The American Diabetes Association recommends focusing on strength training in addition to aerobic exercise such as brisk walking, bicycling, dancing, swimming, hiking, tennis and so on.
Study Says Tylenol Ineffective for Lower Back Pain
Lower back pain is one of the most common ailments that people experience. In fact, according to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, back pain is second only to headaches when it comes to the most common neurological ailments in the U.S. It is the number one cause of job-related disabilities, and it’s estimated that people in the U.S. spend a total of around $50 billion on lower back pain treatment every year. The most common treatment recommended by doctors involves acetaminophen, usually in the form of Tylenol or paracetamol. Now, however, an Australian study suggests that acetaminophen may be no more effective in treating lower back pain than a placebo. Doctors typically recommend Tylenol or paracetamol because of their lack of side effects. The study is the first to address these medications’ effectiveness for treating back pain.
Latest Research Touts Benefits of Organic Foods
At the moment, there is perhaps no issue more confusing to the average food shopper than whether or not to buy organic. For the most part, people believe that organic foods are generally healthier and more nutritious. At the same time, several studies seen to indicate that foods labeled organic have not proven to be any more beneficial than their non-organic counterparts. To make matters worse, many consumers have incorrect notions about the term “organic,” often relating it to “local” or the ever-dubious “all natural.” In fact, one team of researchers recently conducted a study in which 23 percent of participants incorrectly assumed that produce labeled “local” indicated that it was also organic. Seventeen percent incorrectly thought that organic produce is always grown locally. Amid all this confusion, however, a new study shows that organic food may indeed be healthier.
Alzheimer’s Prevention – Yet Another Reason to Exercise
Alzheimer’s disease is a devastating condition that affects both the sufferer and the community of people around them. According to the National Institute on Aging, it’s estimated that around 5.1 million people in the U.S. suffer from the disease, which can eventually cause a person to lose certain thinking, reasoning, memory and behavioral abilities. Health-conscious individuals often begin to think about Alzheimer’s prevention during middle age, as the symptoms of the disease typically start to appear around age 60. While it’s often been thought that more and more people end up suffering from Alzheimer’s simply because we’re all living longer, some new studies indicate that the condition could be somewhat easily preventable. It should come as very little surprise that a healthy diet and a decent amount of exercise play a large role in Alzheimer’s prevention.
