Thirdhand Smoke Causes DNA Damage
You don’t smoke and you stay away from people who are smoking, thereby avoiding both firsthand and secondhand smoke. You should be 100% smoke-free, right? Wrong, according to a new study by researchers at California’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory which indicates the dangers of thirdhand smoke. Thirdhand smoke actually isn’t airborne, gaseous smoke at all, but rather the residue that’s left on clothing, room surfaces and dust after the visible smoke is long gone from the room.

Are Home Births Safe? Usually, Study Says
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the number of home births in the U.S. increased by 29 percent from 2004 to 2009, going from 0.56 to 0.72 percent of births. But is it safe to have your baby at home? According to a new study from the Netherlands, it may actually be safer than having your baby at a hospital – but not by much, and only if you have what’s considered a low-risk pregnancy. The study looked at women who had already had one baby and had minimal complication risks in their current pregnancy. Among these women, about 1 in 1,000 had severe complications when giving birth at home. Meanwhile, about 2.3 in 1,000 had severe complications when giving birth at a hospital. Examples of severe complications include requiring a transfer to the ICU (intensive care unit) or a significant blood transfusion.

Cold Medicines for Kids? Unnecessary and Dangerous – Study
Colds, coughs and sniffles are common at this time of year, and if your child has caught a cold, odds are decent that you gave her some type of cold medication to alleviate the symptoms. In fact, a new study by C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital shows that 44% of parents have given their children under 4 years of age a multi-symptom cold or cough medicine. Another 42% admitted to giving their children cough medicine, while 25% gave decongestants. So, what’s wrong with this picture?. Studies dating back to the 1990s proved that over-the-counter cold and cough medicines are ineffective for young children. Studies conducted in the last decade have gone even farther, finding that cold and cough medications may actually be dangerous for youngsters, causing symptoms that could be much worse than a simple cough.

Half-Million Kids Have Too Much Lead in Blood
A new study by the CDC, or Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, finds that over half a million U.S. children have abnormally high levels of lead in their blood. According to the study, which was conducted between 2007 and 2010, approximately 535,000 kids between the ages of 1 and 5 had at least 5 micrograms per deciliter of lead in their blood. Five mg/dl is the recommended maximum limit for blood lead content. The study indicates that about 2.6% of kids in the 1 to 5 age group are exposed to too much lead. Even low levels of lead in a child’s blood can cause serious physical and mental health issues, including behavioral problems, difficulty paying attention and lower IQ scores. According to the researchers behind the study, any level of lead exposure is too much, especially for a child.

Study: Only 3% of Kids’ Meals at Restaurants are “Healthy”
About 97% of kids’ meals sold at restaurants around the country fail to meet the health and nutrition standards defined by the CSPI, or Center for Science in the Public Interest, according to a study by this same organization. The group analyzed almost 3,500 meals from more than 40 chain restaurants around the country, many of which have recently attempted to amp up the nutritional value of their kids’ meals, in coming to their conclusions. Just as a few examples, the CSPI found that 73% of the meals came with french fries, 78% came with a sugar-sweetened beverage, and over 50% were in excess of 600 calories.
