3 Scientifically-Proven Ways to Curb Children’s Soda Consumption
With today’s lifestyles tending to be fairly hectic and busy, it’s hard for many individuals to find the time to complete all of the items, chores, and responsibilities related to being a parent that is present, involved in their children’s daily lives, and still find the time for rest and relaxation.
Included in this is the challenge of routinely preparing healthy and nutritious meals for not only your children, but yourself as well. This can be witnessed by the fact that both childhood and adult obesity has drastically risen over the past 20 years.
There are two primary reasons for this increase in obesity: the lack of regular physical activity and dietary habits that are filled with consistently consuming high calorie processed foods that are high in fat.
This being said, as a concerned parent, you’ve probably given thought to ways in which you can consistently prepare healthier meals and eliminate the various foods and beverages that are nutritionally deficient and calorically prohibitive. One such beverage that you have probably considered is soda pop. After all, soda for kids consists of little more than sugar, artificial flavorings and empty calories, and its caffeine content can make children hyperactive during the day and irritable as bedtime approaches.

Childhood Bacteria Exposure Builds Immunity
If you’re the parent of a young child, you probably worry about them contracting an infection from bacteria-ridden household surfaces like countertops, toilets and sinks, not to mention public germ receptacles like shopping carts and door handles.
You worry too much, according to a recently published study by Brigham and Women’s Hospital suggesting that childhood bacteria exposure is actually very important to building a strong immune system in children. The study also suggests that the rising prevalence of allergies, asthma and other autoimmune disorders may be due to our increasingly bacteria-averse lifestyles. Although the study was completed using mice as the specimen, researcher and senior physician Dennis Lee Kasper believes the findings to be valid since mice and humans have similar immune systems.

Australian Whooping Cough Epidemic Could Go Global
According to Australian researchers, a new, more powerful strain of whooping cough is rapidly increasing in prevalence, and could possibly have the potential to reach the proportions of a global epidemic if left unchecked.
The researchers said that the new whooping cough strain is the most common strain included in the Australian whooping cough epidemic 2012 (respiratory infection), which has been ongoing for just over four years.
The whooping cough epidemic has been ongoing in Australia since 2008, and the disease has had the biggest impact on children between the ages of 5 and 9. The researchers found this fact especially alarming given that vaccination guidelines and procedures for this age group have not changed since 2004.

Scottish Smoking Ban Improves Pregnancy Health
Virtually everyone knows that smoking cigarettes for an extended period of time can lead to a variety of diseases affecting the heart, liver and lungs of both men and women alike. To this end, smoking is a major contributor for strokes, heart attacks, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), including emphysema and chronic bronchitis, and a variety of cancers including cancers of the larynx and mouth, lung cancer, and pancreatic cancer. In addition, smoking has also been proven to affect unborn children as preterm deliveries are much more frequent in women that regularly smoke.
In 2006, smoking was banned in all public places in Scotland. Since then, the health of both pregnant women and their babies has improved dramatically, according to a recent study conducted by the University of Glasgow.
The Scottish Smoking Ban researchers view the conclusions of their study as evidence that tobacco control legislation can not only have a very real impact on the health and wellness of the general population but, the overall health care costs of the general population as well.
ADHD Over Diagnosed Among Youngest Members of Grade
A recent study conducted by the University of British Columbia indicates that attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is most frequently over-diagnosed among the youngest children in a given elementary or middle school grade.
The conclusions drawn from the study suggest that many of the children were falsely diagnosed with having ADHD diagnosis when they were actually simply the younger and more immature, in relation to the other individuals in their grade.
The findings of the clinical study also demonstrates just how quickly children actually mature, from a mental perspective, during the early years of their lives. In all, the results of this study suggest that literally millions of children may be being incorrectly diagnosed with a condition, ADHD, that they simply do not have.
