Fad Diet Alert: No, Mushrooms Don’t Cause Magical Weight Loss

Celebrities ranging from Katy Perry to Kelly Osbourne are touting the supposed benefits of the “M Plan,” a new fad diet whose proponents claim causes weight loss in exactly the places where women usually want to see it most – the thighs, hips and waist. Like most fad diets, the eating plan is specific and rather silly: replace one meal per day with just mushrooms, continue this every day for two weeks, and watch the pounds melt away. However, also as with the vast majority of fad diets, health and nutrition experts are skeptical of the claims. Adding to the skepticism, no one company, individual, or health professional seems to be taking credit for the development of the diet. A diet plan not created by a dietician or health expert should always be approached with an air of caution.

Phthalates and BPA Tied to Teen Obesity, Insulin Resistance

A pair of new studies have found a potential link between teen insulin resistance and obesity and phthalates and bisphenol A, two chemicals commonly found in certain types of food packaging. However, the researchers aren’t sure whether the increased prevalence of obesity and insulin resistance is directly due to the presence of these chemicals, or whether other factors are responsible. The researchers plan to conduct additional studies to gain a better understanding of the link. BPA in particular has increasingly become a topic of contention. The chemical is widely used in plastics and can be found in the packaging of many foods and drinks. It is also present in infant bottles, medical devices, canned food and water bottles. While many of these things can be avoided, BPA might also be found in certain water supply pipes.

CDC: Obesity Rates Down for Low-Income Preschoolers

Obesity rates are finally on the decline, at least for children between the ages of 2 and 4, according to a new announcement from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or CDC. The study, which focused specifically on low-income youngsters between the years of 2008 and 2011, found declining obesity numbers in 18 U.S. states as well as the Virgin Islands. Dr. Tom Frieden said that although the decline was admittedly minor at just 1% to 2%, it’s significant because it represents positive progress rather than yet another concession to rising obesity rates.

FDA Sets New Guidelines for “Gluten-Free” Foods

People who prefer to avoid gluten or suffer from celiac disease will be pleased to know that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is setting new guidelines to regulate how food manufacturers label their products “gluten-free.” The new guidelines state that foods must be comprised of less than 20 parts gluten per million to be labeled “gluten-free.” Foods labeled “gluten-free” must also be free of barley, rye, wheat and any crossbred grains including the above. Derivatives of these grains must also be left out of the food product, or processed in such a way that the overall gluten concentration in the food falls short of 20 parts per million. While some argue that a gluten-free diet is universally beneficial, it’s still generally considered best for only those with gluten sensitivity or celiac disease to avoid gluten altogether.

Want to Keep Your Memory? Keep Your Teeth, Study Says

Good dental health can have benefits that reach well beyond just a person’s teeth. For example, it’s been suggested that good brushing and flossing habits could be reducing your risk of having a stroke. Some research also indicates that gum disease and cavities could serve as predictors of heart disease. According to a new study by European researchers, keeping your teeth may be also be important for keeping a strong and accurate memory. Though the study was relatively small in size at 273 participants, it found that memory score tests are linked with the number of remaining teeth in older adults. All of the participants were at least 55 years of age at the time of the study, which accounted for age in order to eliminate the notion that tooth loss and memory loss are only natural results of aging that occur together synchronously.
