Centipede Venom: A Natural, Safer Pain Reliever?
As the pharmaceutical industry continues to grow, many researchers are staying open to treatment materials that might seem counter-intuitive. A new study conducted on mice indicates that compounds found in centipede legs could eventually serve as a natural pain reliever safer than the pharmaceutical drugs we have today. According to biochemist Glenn King, one of the lead researchers behind the study performed at Australia’s University of Queensland, the compound’s potency is similar to that of morphine, and in some cases it actually works much better. Best of all, the mice given the centipede venom showed no signs of side effects or addiction. Although more work will need to be done in order to determine if the venom can ever be used practically, the results demonstrate that safer, more effective pain relievers could be on the horizon.

Quitting Smoking While Pregnant Improves Kids’ Emotions
A recent study conducted in the Netherlands adds another item to the list of reasons why women who become pregnant should quit smoking. According to their study, moms-to-be who quit – even if quitting happens after pregnancy begins – bear infants who have fewer emotional problems as young children. The researchers examined brain scans of 226 children who were 6 years old at the time of the study. Half of the children’s mothers smoked during pregnancy, while half did not. Exactly 17 of the mothers who smoked during their pregnancy quit smoking shortly after finding out they’d become pregnant. The good news is that smoking rates among pregnant women have declined steadily in recent decades; about 25% of pregnant women smoked in 1980, while just 12% did in 2000.

Exercise Matches Drugs in Fighting Certain Diseases
When it comes to treating diseases, exercise might too often be viewed as a preventative action. More and more information is showing that exercise might actually be a solution when it comes to specific types of conditions. A new review of over 305 controlled studies indicates that people with certain common and potentially fatal diseases could benefit from exercise as much as they could from prescription medications. The researchers behind the review looked at studies concerning the effects of exercise on the risk of death resulting from prediabetes, stroke, heart disease and heart failure, as well as studies examining how drugs affect these diseases. A total of 340,000 people participated in the studies covered by the review.

Vast Majority of Drug Commercials Mislead, Study Shows
Though you probably expect a little exaggeration and “best-case-scenario”-ism when viewing advertisements for weight loss products, hair-thickening shampoos and age-reversing skin creams, you may assume that commercials for prescription and over-the-counter drugs contain the truth and nothing but the truth. After all, drug commercials and their content are monitored closely by the Food and Drug Administration, right? Unfortunately, the reality is that most advertisements for both prescription and OTC medications contain at least some misleading information, according to a new study by researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Dartmouth College. Advertisements were also found to simply leave out important information regarding the drugs.

Survey: Americans Ill-Informed About the Brain
People only use about 10% of their brains, right? You’ve probably heard this notion from plenty of trusted sources, perhaps even your high school science teacher. In fact, according to a survey conducted by Harris Interactive, about 65% of Americans believe this “fact” – even though it couldn’t be further from the truth. While researchers are not entirely sure where this myth came from, some attribute it to American psychologist William James or even a misquoting of Albert Einstein. In reality, people use virtually 100% of their brains, as proven by brain imaging technology, though not all brain regions are active simultaneously. Over the course of one day, however, you’ll end up using just about every last bit of your gray matter. The survey was sponsored by The Michael J. Fox Foundation, which raises funds for Parkinson’s research.
