Arsenic Detected in Some Organic Foods
In most cases, choosing the organic versions of the foods you purchase is a great way to lower your exposure to a variety of harmful chemicals, pesticides, antibiotics, and in some cases, steroids and growth hormones.
Unfortunately, a recently published study has proven that this doesn’t always hold true. The study detected high levels of arsenic in a number of organic food products, including energy shots, cereal bars and, most alarmingly, arsenic in organic baby food. It’s currently believed that consuming arsenic can increase your risk of cancer.
In particular, the study found that organic brown rice syrup, commonly used in organic foods as a replacement for high fructose corn syrup, was to blame.
The most tainted products examined in the study were found to have arsenic concentrations in excess of 12 times the safe drinking water limit as defined by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Frequent Flu Infections Boost Brain Disease Risk
If you’re the type of individual that tends to skip getting your flu shot each year, and you consistently get the flu once or twice a year, newly published flu research may cause you to reconsider your decision. The reason being, while the symptoms associated with the flu may seem like they come and go with the timeframe that you feel sick, new research data may be pointing to the fact that this may not necessarily be true.
According to recent clinical analysis work conducted by Harvard Medical School neurology professor Dr. Ole Isacson, viral infections such as the flu may have long-term detrimental effects on the brain. Based on the results of the study, these detrimental effects on the brain could go unnoticed until much later in life, when, over years of accumulation, lead to a variety of brain diseases including Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s.

Don’t Bother with Antibiotics for Sinus Infections, Study Says
When many individuals become sick, they visit their doctors in hopes of receiving a prescription antibiotic. Unfortunately, antibiotics are only designed to treat bacterial infections, leaving those with a virus (such as the common cold) to battle against the sickness on their own.
Researchers at St. Louis, Missouri’s Washington University School of Medicine recently discovered another shortcoming of antibiotics. According to their study, antibiotics for sinus infections are ineffective.
The irony is that, as of now, approximately 20% of all antibiotics prescriptions are written with the intent of accomplishing exactly that, representing a potentially enormous waste of health care dollars.
Trans Fat Levels Dropping in U.S. Adults
Americans officially have something to be proud of in the battle against obesity. A recently published study indicates that the average United States adult has far less trans fat in their blood today than they did just 10 years ago. Trans fat is considered the worst type of fat, and is most commonly found in processed foods. Several of the large food manufacturers have reduced or eliminated their use of trans fats in their processing, or trans fatty acids. This, in turn, is the most likely the primary cause for the decline in percentage of trans fat found in the blood.
The primary concern with consuming trans fat is that they increase low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels while reducing the level of of beneficial high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol in the blood. This is believed to significantly increase the risk of suffering from a heart attack.

Diet Soda Consumption Increases Risk of Heart Attack
If you are currently trying to lose weight safely and effectively, you probably already know that eliminating regular soda from your dietary regime, if you regularly consume soda, is one of the best ways to reduce your daily total intake of calories.
This being said, many dieters accomplish this by transitioning from drinking regular soda to drinking diet soda, which has zero calories and is sweetened artificially.
However, a newly published clinical study is indicating that switching to diet soda may not be a health-positive choice after all, whether you are actively trying to lose weight or not. According to the results of the diet soda and heart attack study, drinking diet soda on a daily basis can significantly increase your overall risk of suffering from A heart attack and/or stroke.
