Spray Tan Health Risks Highlighted in New Surprising Study

Spray tanning is widely favored by those looking to get some summer color without risking their health. The strategy seems sound, as many people try to limit their sun exposure to prevent getting skin cancer. The Skin Cancer Foundation states that around two million people are diagnosed annually. Unfortunately, a new study reported by ABC News indicates that spray tan health risks may be worse than previously believed. According to the report, virtually all spray tanning agents include dihydroxyacetone, or DHA, a chemical known to create genetic mutations in cells in laboratory studies. Although studies have yet to be conducted using human subjects, researchers warn that humans could be affected by these genetic mutations as well. Whether these genetic mutations would pose a health risk is another question that remains unanswered at this time.

Pregnant Women Engage in Binge Drinking Like Nonpregnant Women

The idea that pregnant women should avoid alcohol is commonplace, even among women who have no intentions of becoming pregnant. Indeed, the vast majority of pregnant women don’t drink, much less become binge drinking women. Mothers most typically avoid alcohol to prevent their child from developing possible health issues such as heart defects, poor growth, and problems with speech. Alcohol consumption can sometimes also lead to miscarriage or premature birth. Unfortunately, pregnant women who do decide to binge drink typically do so in exactly the same fashion as nonpregnant women who binge drink. In other words, they do so just as frequently, and with roughly the same number of drinks per session, according to a new study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Whooping Cough Vaccine Schedule May Be Insufficient

A few days ago, we reported on a new CDC study indicating that whooping cough infection rates are headed for an all-time high this year in the United States. In response to the report, researchers are saying that the whooping cough vaccine schedule may need to be modified in order to more thoroughly protect teens and preteens from the infection. Whooping cough cases spiked dramatically in California during 2010. A significant spike was observed in children between the ages of 7 and 10, most of whom had already been vaccinated according to guidelines, according to the researchers behind a new study. This indicates that the immunity provided by the last early-childhood booster shot, given when children are aged 4 to 6, may wear off well before their preteen booster shot, which is given when they’re either 11 or 12.

Chocolate Lovers Rejoice: Chocolate Lower BMI Studies Confirmed

It’s no secret that chocolate is one of the most popular sweets available. In 2001, it was estimated that Americans consumed around three billion pounds of the candy. Consuming too much chocolate can certainly have negative effects, but when done right, some research suggests the candy could actually be good for you. But can chocolate lower BMI? A recent study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine has found that people who eat chocolate frequently have a lower average BMI than people who eat chocolate less often. Participants in this study certainly didn’t indulge in a full chocolate cake, of course. Instead, participants treated the chocolate more like a supplement in their lifestyles, consuming the tasty treat about two times a week. Participants in the study also exercised an average of 3.6 times each week.

CDC: Whooping Cough Outbreak Rate to Soon Reach Record High

A new study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) predicts that the prevalence of whooping cough infections in the United States will reach an all-time high by the end of 2012. The current year has already been host to 18,000 whooping cough outbreak cases, counting only those that have been reported to the CDC. Dr. Anne Schuchat, director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases within the CDC, said that only around 9,000 cases had been reported by this month in 2011. For the past five years running, fewer than 9,000 cases had been reported by this time of the year, as well. Dr. Schuchat indicated that if whooping cough outbreak cases continue to appear at their current rate for the rest of the year, 2012 will end up breaking the whooping cough record that was set all the way back in 1959.
