Marijuana Pill Better than Smoke for Pain?
A new study conducted by Columbia University indicates that taking a marijuana pill may offer the same pain-relief benefits as smoking marijuana, without the side effects of smoking. The researchers also found that subjects who took a pill form of marijuana, known as dronabinol, experienced relief from pain for about 4.5 hours, while those who smoked felt relief for a relatively brief 2.5 hours. As a trade-off, the pain-reducing effects of smoked marijuana were observed to set in approximately 15 minutes after delivery. The subjects in the study who took dronabinol waited approximately one hour to experience the same effects. During the study, subjects either took dronabinol or smoked marijuana, with both delivery methods designed to provide the same dosage of active ingredients thought to provide pain relief.

Lyme Disease Decreasing in South, Increasing in North
A new 15-year study by the University of Toronto indicates that Lyme disease rates are increasing in northern states and decreasing in southern ones. While the researchers found Lyme disease rates to be largely stagnant in 15 states, they found significant declines in 14 states and equally significant increases in 21 other states. The study was conducted from 1992 until 2007. If you live in a state affected by Lyme disease, it’s important to take the proper precautions before (and after) heading outdoors with your family this spring and summer.

Taking a Supplement with DMAA? Stop Now, Says FDA
If you take a supplement containing DMAA (dimethylamylamine) you should stop doing so immediately, according to a new report from the Food and Drug Administration labeling the drug “dangerous” and “illegal.” DMAA is found in certain supplements intended to assist with weight loss and body building. The side effects can include shortness of breath, high blood pressure, irregular heartbeat and even heart attack, according to the FDA. The announcement marks the first time the FDA has officially warned consumers about the potential dangers of DMAA. However, the organization has worked previously to get supplements including the ingredient stripped from the market. In 2012, the United States military removed DMAA-containing supplements from stores on military bases after suspecting that such supplements were related to two soldier deaths.

Why Do 13% of U.S. Adults Skip Medication? Money
An alarmingly high number of people report skipping doses of their medication in order to save money, according to a new study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC also counted many reports of individuals saving money by delaying the fulfillment of their prescriptions. In total, the organization found that 12.6% of individuals between age 18 and 64 stray from the prescriptions given to them by their health care providers in order to pinch pennies. By comparison, just 5.8% of people over the age of 64 said the same, providing some reassurance. The survey used to come to these findings was distributed nationally in 2011.

Red Meat and Heart Disease: Is Saturated Fat Really to Blame?
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 715,000 people in the U.S. suffer from a heart attack each year. High blood sugar, smoking and high blood pressure are all known to contribute to the possibility of heart disease and heart attacks. Eating large quantities of red meat also increases your risk of heart disease because it contains high levels of cholesterol and saturated fat – right? While that may be at least partially true, researchers from Ohio’s Cleveland Clinic say that their new study may have identified the truer culprit. According to their study, the primary component in red meat that influences heart disease risk may be l-carnitine, a nutrient also readily available in dietary supplements. What is l-carnitine, and why are people taking it in supplement form if it increases the risk of developing heart disease.
