CDC: Obesity Rates Down for Low-Income Preschoolers

Obesity rates are finally on the decline, at least for children between the ages of 2 and 4, according to a new announcement from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or CDC. The study, which focused specifically on low-income youngsters between the years of 2008 and 2011, found declining obesity numbers in 18 U.S. states as well as the Virgin Islands. Dr. Tom Frieden said that although the decline was admittedly minor at just 1% to 2%, it’s significant because it represents positive progress rather than yet another concession to rising obesity rates.

FDA Sets New Guidelines for “Gluten-Free” Foods

People who prefer to avoid gluten or suffer from celiac disease will be pleased to know that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is setting new guidelines to regulate how food manufacturers label their products “gluten-free.” The new guidelines state that foods must be comprised of less than 20 parts gluten per million to be labeled “gluten-free.” Foods labeled “gluten-free” must also be free of barley, rye, wheat and any crossbred grains including the above. Derivatives of these grains must also be left out of the food product, or processed in such a way that the overall gluten concentration in the food falls short of 20 parts per million. While some argue that a gluten-free diet is universally beneficial, it’s still generally considered best for only those with gluten sensitivity or celiac disease to avoid gluten altogether.

Hydration Important for Brain, Not Just Body

The United States is experiencing a major heat wave right now, and hopefully you’re doing your best to stay hydrated – not just for your body, but for your brain as well, according to a new study conducted at the University of East London School of Psychology. Subjects in the study, which was admittedly small, consumed about 24 ounces of water and performed better on several mental tests than subjects who didn’t drink any water immediately before the test. Test scores were even worse for individuals who went into the test feeling thirsty, leading researchers to conclude that mental response time may be slowed by the distraction of thirst. The study results might not be too surprising, however, as water consumption is well-known to have many benefits including calorie control, body fluid maintenance, improved kidney function, and healthy skin.

Fast Food Fish Platter Named America’s Worst Restaurant Meal

Fast food is generally considered to be very unhealthy, but some meals are worse than others. So, what’s the least-healthy restaurant meal in the United States? Although you might expect it to be some enormous triple bacon and cheese combo from one of our many fast food burger joints, it’s actually one that includes a main course typically thought of as healthy: fish. But according to the CSPI, or Center for Science and the Public Interest, the organization that rated the meals, this particular meal is unhealthy not because it includes fish, but because of how the fish is prepared and what comes with it.

40% of “Designated Drivers” Actually Impaired by Alcohol

With summer comes bon fires, beach parties, barbecues and music festivals, and with those types of events, alcohol sometimes comes too. The typical safety advice in these types of situations always starts with the same important tip: designate a sober driver so you and yours can get home safely when the festivities have ended. But is having a designated driver really a guarantee that your wheelman will be clearheaded at the evening’s conclusion? Far from it, according to a new study that finds that approximately 40% of so-called “designated drivers” actually end up drinking anyhow. The study is particularly troubling considering the statistics from MADD, which state that 28 people die per day in the U.S. as a result of drunk driving crashes. Also, 300,000 incidents of drinking and driving occur daily.
