One in Six Become Ill After Drinking Raw Milk

About one out of every six individuals who drink raw milk become ill as a result, according to new data from the Minnesota Department of Health. Illnesses incurred include parasitic infections such as cryptosporidiosis and bacterial infections including campylobacter, E. coli and salmonella. During the study, researchers came upon 530 cases of infections resulting from raw milk consumption between the years of 2001 and 2010. At the same time, researchers noted that many more raw milk illnesses go unreported, undiagnosed or unconfirmed by a lab. Typically, milk is heated in a process known as pasteurization in order to kill bacteria before it’s rapidly cooled. As milk is known to be an effective medium in the growth of microbes, it’s typically thought that unpasteurized milk can be rife with dangerous bacteria. Raw milk does not undergo pasteurization.

Healthy, Yet Obese – Is it Possible?

Controversy has surrounded the debate over whether people can be considered “healthy” even if they’re obese. While some argue that it’s perfectly possible to be in good health while carrying many extra pounds of weight, others say that obesity itself is a major health danger, even if an individual is free of the types of conditions that typically accompany it. Typical obesity-related conditions include high blood cholesterol, high blood sugar and high blood pressure. A new study conducted at Toronto’s Mount Sinai Hospital found that people who are obese, in comparison to those who are of a normal weight, are about 24% more likely to die from any cause over a 10-year period, or to have a heart problem during this same timeframe. The two groups compared above had no metabolic problems at all – only their weight differed.

Does Turkey Really Make You Sleepy?

With Thanksgiving just one day away, you and your family are probably already deep into preparations for a feast of turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, cranberry sauce and all the fixings. If you’ll be sitting down to dinner with a big crowd tomorrow, chances are good that you’ll hear at least one mention of how eating too much turkey will make you sleepy, an anecdote you probably recall hearing at countless Thanksgiving feasts in the past. Evidence of this may occur when one or more family members fall asleep after the big meal. People who are about to give an important presentation or perform for an audience are also sometimes told to eat turkey in an effort to calm nerves. But is the notion really true, or have claims of the sleep-inducing effects of turkey been exaggerated over the years?

Eating Nuts Extends Life

While most people are aware that big factors such as physical exercise and a healthy diet contribute to a long life, it can sometimes be difficult to keep these big ideas in mind while making small decisions. For example, one might not have longevity in mind when choosing a mid-afternoon snack at the office. Luckily, eating just a handful of nuts every day could extend the length of your life, according to a new study conducted by the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Massachusetts. The study was comprehensive, containing health information from over 118,000 individuals, and it found that eating a single ounce of nuts every single day made study study participants about 20% less at risk of death over the course of the 30-year study period – at least in comparison to those who didn’t eat nuts at all.

People Underestimate Calories in Fast Food Meals

Despite many fast food restaurants making nutritional information more visible, the majority of fast food eaters believe their meals contain fewer calories than they actually do, according to a recent study by Harvard Medical School. About 3,000 customers ranging from teens to adults to parents of young kids participated in the study, which included restaurants such as Dunkin’ Donuts, KFC, Wendy’s, Subway, Burger King and McDonald’s. Approximately 66% of the participants believed their meals contained fewer calories than they actually did. The average adult participant underestimated the caloric value of their meal by about 175 calories, with parents underestimating their children’s meals by the same amount. Teens were even worse, underestimating their meals by about 259 calories.
