So-Called “Natural Foods” are Misleading

Are you more inclined to buy food at the grocery store if it has a label that uses the word “natural?” According to a survey recently conducted by Consumer Reports, many people are. However, the word “natural” on a food label probably doesn’t mean what you think it does. While it certainly has a positive connotation, the FDA actually has very unclear guidelines for using the term. The agency has stated that “natural” is supposed to indicate the food has no synthetic or artificial additives; however, Consumer Reports states that even foods marked “natural” often still have these types of ingredients.

While a term like “organic” has a specific legal definition in the United States, “natural” does not. Some countries, such as the United Kingdom, Canada and Israel, have defined what foods can be labeled as “natural.”

U.S. Diabetes Statistics Continue to Rise

According to the latest reports from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the number of individuals in the United States suffering from diabetes is now approximately 29 million, which accounts for a staggering 12.3 percent of adults. Perhaps even more shocking is the number of adults in the U.S. who have blood sugar levels that are considered to be at pre-diabetic: 86 million. Stated another way, approximately one-third of the entire United States population is considered to be at pre-diabetic blood sugar levels.

Not only is the proliferation of diabetes a serious health concern, but it’s also financially draining. When accounting for both medical costs and lost wages, Americans spent $245 billion on the treatment of diabetes and related complications in 2012. The figure in 2010 was $174 billion.

There are many reasons and conditions that can ultimately lead to an individual suffering from diabetes. However, for the majority of people, the prevention of diabetes might ultimately involve some relatively simple lifestyle changes and modifications.

Are Fried Foods Really That Bad?

Most of us have seen the statistics depicting that more and more individuals, worldwide, are suffering from either excessive weight gain or obesity, especially within the developed nations. This, in part, is due to the fact that many individuals are finding that they are trapped in a lifestyle that is quite busy and hectic. This being said, many individuals are finding it increasingly more difficult to consistently set aside the time to regularly perform an exercise routine, to participate in a variety of physical type activities, and to consistently consume a healthy whole foods diet that is well balanced and nutritionally rich.

The combination of decreasing the total number of calories burned per day, due to lack of sufficient physical activity, while increasing the total number of calories consumed per day only serves to worsen the problem of excessive weight gain.

In regards to traditional dietary intake wisdom, at least over the last 40 years or so, individuals have been told that they should avoid fried foods due to their large quantities of saturated fat and calories. However, a newly published study suggests that fried foods don’t affect everyone equally. In the study, changes in the subjects’ body mass index (BMI) after eating fried foods seemed to depend largely on their genetic propensity for obesity.

Big Changes Coming to Nutrition Labels

With the overweight and obesity rates in the United States at such a high level a new emphasis is being placed on providing consumers with more information, in relation to the information that is contained on the nutritional labels of various food products. This being said, while there are several factors that contribute to excessive weight gain (i.e. physical activity, food choices, individual metabolism rates etc.), the quality of the food and the contents of the food are definitely a factor to consider. A new press release from the Food and Drug Administration reveals some changes slated for nutrition labels over the coming years. The changes are designed to better guide consumers in making healthy dietary decisions in light of advancements that have been made in nutritional science since 2006, the year in which nutritional labels were last updated.

Sodium Intake Declines Among Americans, But Not Enough

Although a new report on salt intake by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicates that Americans are consuming less sodium today than they did about 10 years ago, we’re still eating far too much salt on an average day, according to the researchers behind the report. As of 2010, the average person ate about 3,424 mg of sodium each day, a figure reduced from 3,518 mg of sodium daily in 2003. Infants were not included in the study, though people of all other ages were. The decline may be partly due to the fact that popular food brands increasingly offer low-sodium options. For example, Progresso Soup, Bush’s Beans and V8 often have low-sodium versions placed directly adjacent to their typical products in supermarkets. This is important, as processed foods such as canned products and lunch meat contain a notoriously high amount of sodium.
