If you’ve spent any time using the Internet to research home remedies for dandruff recently, you’ve probably noticed advertisements for dandruff “miracle cures” you can apply at home using common household ingredients. In many cases, the suggestion is to apply baby oil, vegetable oil, olive oil or some other type of oil to your scalp to rid yourself of dandruff. The same treatments are purported to work on infants who have cradle cap, the name given to severe dandruff in babies.
Unfortunately, researchers say that using vegetable or olive oil may actually increase the severity of dandruff rather than reverse it. Some less common home remedies for dandruff that can be found on the internet include aspirin, baking soda, apple cider vinegar, mouthwash, salt and garlic. The jury is still out on most of these “cures” as well, however.
A Rundown of the Basic Home Remedies for Dandruff
The recommendations given by purveyors of home remedies for dandruff are usually pretty similar to one another: you apply a specified oil to your scalp, leave it in for as short as 15 minutes or as long as overnight, comb your head to remove dandruff scales from your scalp, then shampoo as normal.
However, some of the treatments suggest using plant-based oils such as vegetable, canola and olive oil, while others suggest the use of baby oil and other examples of mineral oils. Mineral oils consist of petroleum, while plant oils include unsaturated and saturated fatty acids, and this is why mineral oils often work to treat dandruff while plant oils fail.
Why do Mineral Oils Work When Plant Oils Fail?
The most common cause of dandruff is when the scalp produces too much sebum, or oil. This leads to an excessive production of Malassezia, the yeast that naturally grows on the scalp. In general, mineral oil treatments are believed to assist in the removal of dandruff scales, but researchers including Dr. Erica Glenn and Dr. Elaine Siegfried of the St. Louis University School of Medicine aren’t convinced that any at-home oil treatments will permanently cure dandruff.
The Malassezia that grow on your scalp are incapable of digesting petroleum-based mineral oils, which is why applying them to the scalp can help temporarily clear dandruff scales. However, these same Malassezia eat fatty acids for food, causing them to grow in number and ultimately making dandruff worse. The researchers said that they actually use olive oil to grow Malassezia when conducting experiments in laboratory dishes.
Home Remedies for Dandruff: The Bottom Line
Home-based treatments for dandruff may work at least on a temporary basis, but only if mineral oil is used. Plant-based oils, on the other hand, could actually make dandruff worse.
