A new report from the American Heart Association indicates that pet ownership is a great way for a person to reduce their risk of heart disease, especially if that pet is a dog. According to Dr. Glenn Levine, a medicine professor and author of the report, many studies have been conducted on this phenomenon over the past 10 years or so. The AHA report explains that owning a pet could have a positive influence on several risk factors that contribute to heart disease, such as poor exercise habits, obesity and hypertension, also known as high blood pressure.

Some of the studies Dr. Levine is referring to sought to explore the link between owning a dog and blood pressure levels. Overall, these studies found that owning a pet reduces hypertension. To be fair, only one of these studies could be considered a truly randomized, controlled clinical trial. However, in this study of 30 subjects, people who adopted a dog experienced a subsequent drop in blood pressure.
Additional studies have indicated that dog ownership makes an individual more likely to get their recommended daily dose of exercise. This one is pretty obvious, since most dogs should be walked daily or at least close to every day. Of course, pet owners won’t actually experience higher levels of physical activity if they don’t walk their pets.
Studies have also shown that people who own pets have lower levels of fat in their blood, likely a result of increased physical activity levels.
Along these same lines, studies have shown that regularly walking a dog may reduce the pet owner’s risk of obesity. If you struggle with your weight, getting a dog that enjoys frequent walks could get you started on the path to better physical activity habits, especially since walking a dog is considered an “entry-level” form of exercise with few barriers to entry for those with sufficient mobility.
Is a Pet Right for You?
According to Dr. Levine, it’s not a good idea to buy a pet for the sole reason of reducing your risk for heart disease. If you don’t have a genuine desire to care for a pet and give it a positive environment, you’ll be less likely to walk it frequently. Further, the pet could create more stress than relaxation and enjoyment, potentially increasing your blood pressure instead of dropping it.
In addition, you shouldn’t believe that getting a pet is any replacement for eating a healthy, calorie-conscious diet and getting regular exercise when it comes to maintaining heart health. Other ways of preventing heart disease include avoiding excess sodium and cholesterol, and avoiding tobacco products.
