Over 200 Products Now Included in 2012 Peanut Butter Recall

A 2012 peanut butter recall that initially only included certain products sold at Trader Joe’s has now expanded to include roughly 240 products, according to a new announcement made by U.S. health officials. The peanut butter products are subject to recall because they may be contaminated with Salmonella, according to officials. All of the recalled products include peanut butter made by New Mexico manufacturing company Sunland Inc. An announcement from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) indicates that samples taken from the company’s manufacturing facilities have tested positive for Salmonella bacteria. Roughly 100 Sunland products were recalled toward the end of September as a result of Salmonella bacteria contamination. The expansion of the recall means that 240 products are now being pulled from store shelves and, hopefully, from home pantry shelves as well.

Inventors Design New Child Proof Bottle for Sprayed Products

Inventors have developed a new spray bottle that could prevent up to 6,000 injuries to children each year. These injuries occur when children gain access to spray bottles containing household cleaners and other chemicals, and accidentally spray the contents onto themselves. Parents would still ultimately be responsible for preventing their children from accessing chemical spray bottles to completely minimize the chance of harm, though the new child proof bottles would go a long way toward preventing accidents. In a move that will have you thinking “why didn’t I come up with that,” the inventors have taken the conventional spray bottle design — which features a forward-facing trigger located under the spray nozzle — and added a second trigger that protrudes from the rear side of the bottle. Both triggers must be depressed simultaneously for the spray bottle to dispense its contents.

Anxiety and Sleep Drugs May Increase Dementia Risk

Taking drugs categorized as benzodiazepines when you’re at least 65 years of age may drastically increase your dementia risk, according to a new study by French researchers. These drugs include Xanax, Valium and other similar prescription medications designed as sleeping aids or anxiety reducers. In the study, those who took such drugs increased their likelihood of developing dementia by 50% in comparison to those who did not over the same 15-year time span. Concrete causes of dementia are still up for debate. In general, the Alzheimer’s Association recommends protecting yourself from potential head trauma in order to avoid dementia. They also suggest trying to avoid blood-related conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes. So far, studies have not confirmed the once-believed myth that aluminum causes dementia.
