Don’t Bother with Antibiotics for Sinus Infections, Study Says

When many individuals become sick, they visit their doctors in hopes of receiving a prescription antibiotic. Unfortunately, antibiotics are only designed to treat bacterial infections, leaving those with a virus (such as the common cold) to battle against the sickness on their own.

Researchers at St. Louis, Missouri’s Washington University School of Medicine recently discovered another shortcoming of antibiotics. According to their study, antibiotics for sinus infections are ineffective.

The irony is that, as of now, approximately 20% of all antibiotics prescriptions are written with the intent of accomplishing exactly that, representing a potentially enormous waste of health care dollars.

Most Kids Fall Short of Sleep Recommendations, Study Shows

We all know, as adults, that it is easy to get caught up in the daily grind of life’s trials and tribulations. In many cases, this type of lifestyle leads to erratic eating habits, inconsistent physical activity, and irregular sleeping patterns. In addition, parents that find themselves in this scenario often find that it can affect their children’s lifestyles as well.

If you frequently worry about sleep recommendations for children, you are not alone. Sweets are OK for Breakfast, Study Suggests

If you are currently following a weight loss program that is considered to be safe, effective, and promote real results, you would probably consider that eating a slice of pie, cake, or some other type of dessert for breakfast would be one of the worst mistakes you could possibly make. However, and to the surprise of many nutritionists and weight loss experts, a recently published study is suggesting exactly the opposite.

The study, conducted by Israel’s Tel Aviv University, indicates that overweight and obese individuals may be able to adhere more closely to their weight loss diets and sustain their weight loss results for a longer period of time if they consume a breakfast with plenty of carbohydrates, protein and a dessert instead of a dietary regime that focuses on low calories, low carbohydrates, and no type of dessert.

Trans Fat Levels Dropping in U.S. Adults

Americans officially have something to be proud of in the battle against obesity. A recently published study indicates that the average United States adult has far less trans fat in their blood today than they did just 10 years ago. Trans fat is considered the worst type of fat, and is most commonly found in processed foods. Several of the large food manufacturers have reduced or eliminated their use of trans fats in their processing, or trans fatty acids. This, in turn, is the most likely the primary cause for the decline in percentage of trans fat found in the blood.

The primary concern with consuming trans fat is that they increase low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels while reducing the level of of beneficial high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol in the blood. This is believed to significantly increase the risk of suffering from a heart attack.
