Chewy Spice Cookies

  • (1 cup) packed brown sugar
  • (1/2 cup) vegetable shortening
  • (1/2 cup) molasses
  • (1 large) egg
  • (2 1/4 cups) all-purpose flour
  • (2 tsp.) baking soda
  • (1 tsp.) ground cinnamon
  • (1/2 tsp.) ground cloves
  • (1/2 tsp.) ground ginger
  • (1/4 tsp.) salt
  • (1/2 cup) water
  • (1/4 cup) granulated sugar

Chewy Spice Cookies

Molasses cookies with ground spices and a crunchy sugar coating.

  1. 1In a medium bowl, stir together flour, baking soda, cinnamon, cloves, ginger and salt; set aside.
  2. 2Use a mixer on medium to cream together brown sugar and shortening. Beat in molasses and egg. Add flour mixture, beat on low until combined. Cover, freeze 1 hour.

  3. 3Preheat oven to 375°F.
  4. 4Set out 2 small bowls. Fill one with water and one with sugar. Spray your hands with cooking spray, and shape frozen dough into 1 in. balls. Dip one side into water, then sugar. Place on baking sheet.

  5. 5Bake 8 minutes. Cool on wire racks and enjoy.
