1In a medium bowl, stir together flour, baking soda, cinnamon, cloves, ginger and salt; set aside.
2Use a mixer on medium to cream together brown sugar and shortening. Beat in molasses and egg. Add flour mixture, beat on low until combined. Cover, freeze 1 hour.
3Preheat oven to 375°F.
4Set out 2 small bowls. Fill one with water and one with sugar. Spray your hands with cooking spray, and shape frozen dough into 1 in. balls. Dip one side into water, then sugar. Place on baking sheet.
5Bake 8 minutes. Cool on wire racks
