Rotator Cuff Tendonitis

Rotator Cuff Tendonitis

Description Of The Injury: The rotator cuff is a collection of muscles and tendons located in your shoulder. These muscles and tendons are primarily stabilizers that help in keeping the upper arm bone firmly in the shoulder socket and help with large upper body exercises and movements. When the rotator cuff muscles and tendons undergo chronic stress, tendonitis may result. This injury is commonly found amongst baseball pitchers.

Injury Symptoms: The shoulder will be painful, inflamed and tender. It may feel weak, and may be accompanied with a loss of range of motion. Pain may increase when holding something heavy with the affected limb or when lying on the affected shoulder.

Additional Information

Home Treatments:

Rotator cuff tendonitis can be alleviated at home by initially resting your shoulder. Ice should be applied on the tender and inflamed area 20 minutes at a time, 3-4 times per day for the first several days. Afterwards, the application of heat packs may help loosen the tight muscles. A non steroidal anti inflammatory medication should be used to help reduce the pain.

Professional Medical Treatments:

Most rotator cuff tendonitis cases can be treated at home. Chronic rotator cuff problems can lead to arthritis and may be a candidate for partial shoulder replacement or total shoulder replacement surgery. If the tendonitis is due to a tear, surgery will likely be needed to repair it.

Physical Therapy and Exercises:

Usually, a physical therapist will help you perform exercises to rehabilitate a rotator cuff injury. Exercises will include various internal and external rotation exercises that are done with dumbbells. This involves laying down on side, keeping the elbow bent at a 90 degree angle and lifting and lowering the dumbbell by rotating at the shoulder joint.

Exercise Techniques to Prevent Injury:

Prevention exercises are the same as the rehabilitation exercises. They include external rotation, internal rotation and lateral raises using dumbbells. The rotation exercises are done laying down, while the lateral raise is performed standing or sitting. These exercises should be performed slowly throughout the range of motion for best effect.
