Additional Information
Home Treatments:
Because a sprain is soft tissue injury, it can usually be treated with the rest, ice, compression and elevation principle. The neck should be rested, and sudden rotation or flexion of the neck should be avoided. Ice should be administered for the first several days, 20 minutes at at time. Later on, a heat pack can be applied to reduce neck stiffness. A non steroidal anti inflammatory medication may help with the pain. A sprain will usually heal within 4 to 6 weeks.
Professional Medical Treatments:
If the neck sprain is identified as a severe or complete rupture of a ligament, surgery may be needed. The use of a soft neck collar may be needed to immobilize the neck area and allow for appropriate healing.
Physical Therapy and Exercises:
The neck should be moved through its range of motion gradually as a way to rehabilitate from a neck sprain. The neck should be tilted back and forth, side to side and rotated side to side, with each posture being held for several seconds each. Once this can be done through the entire range of motion, resistance can be added by placing your hand head and gradually increasing the resistance against the movement.
Exercise Techniques to Prevent Injury:
Neck sprains are not primarily prevented via exercise techniques. However, stretching and exercising the neck with the aforementioned workout daily will help keep the neck muscles and ligaments loose and strong. Additionally strengthening the neck muscles and trapezius muscles by doing weighted shoulder shrugs and upright rows will help cushion the neck ligaments from an impact.
